Ottawa is one of the world's most beautiful cities, and has been ranked sixth in the world for quality of life. Throughout its history, Ottawa has been a military building site, a thriving lumber town, the capital of a new and vibrant nation, and most recently, a high tech hotspot known as Silicon Valley North.

Ottawa is the fourth largest urban area in Canada, and a cosmopolitan centre that offers the joie de vivre of a small town. The City of Ottawa is a community of approximately one million people composed of 11 individual municipalities which amalgamated in 2000. Ottawa is very accessible, with convenient and affordable housing of all types. You can commute downtown or drive to cottage country in less than 20 minutes.

Ottawa lies at the confluence of three rivers (Ottawa, Rideau and Gatineau), with hundreds of nearby lakes, and the historic Rideau Canal for boating and skating. Golfing, fishing, hiking, skiing, and many other outdoor and wilderness activities are only minutes away. The Greenbelt -- the capital's emerald necklace -- rings the city with a vast network of bicycle paths, and walking and hiking trails. One of the area's most famous landmarks is the lush, richly varied natural retreat called Gatineau Park, some 36,000 hectares of rolling hills, pristine lakes and splendid panoramic views.

Ottawa boasts a wide variety of urban attractions, from its Parliament Buildings, National Arts Centre, twelve national museums, major institutions and historic sites, to the busy Byward Market, with its many restaurants, shops and pubs.

Ottawa is a city for all seasons. Fall colours in the Gatineau Hills are unrivalled. During Winterlude, the Rideau Canal becomes the world's longest skating rink. In the spring, the Canadian Tulip Festival transforms the city into a mosaic of colours and fragrances with the blooming of hundreds of thousands of bulbs. With summer, comes the fireworks of Canada Day celebrations on Parliament Hill.

Ottawa has a dynamic and diversified economy, a vibrant business community, and a well established infrastructure of business support services. The high-technology community is well supported by professional services and commercial and retail businesses which have grown by more than 300 percent during the past ten years.
