Bernhardt Furniture transforms customer engagement with IBM Cloud

Digital transformation in only ten weeks

Published on 4 Nov 2016

For us to be able to go through this whole digital transformation in a 10-week period was an amazing feat. But then the best thing about that is it also laid the groundwork for future changes.

When Bernhardt Furniture was founded in 1889 with 25 employees, it was the lone industrial enterprise in Lenoir, North Carolina. Today, though still headquartered in Lenoir and still run by the Bernhardt family, the company is a leading global furniture manufacturer with eight US manufacturing facilities and five international offices. As it has grown, Bernhardt has maintained its focus on both product quality and social responsibility, winning many awards for design excellence and environmental stewardship.

Business need
Bernhardt wanted to replace its paper-based sales process with a mobile customer-engagement and ordering solution, but the company did not have the internal IT resources to build and launch a mobile environment.

In collaboration with the IBM jStart team, Bernhardt leveraged APIs and cloud-based resources on the IBM Bluemix platform to build and launch a mobile sales and analytics environment in only ten weeks. The company adopted a DevOps approach to software development to facilitate quick and continuous improvements to the app, and it used a microservices architecture for maximum adaptability.

Bernhardt enhanced customer engagement as well as sales reps' efficiency, and gained critical insights into its customers and their buying processes. As a result, sellers were able to engage 20 percent more customers during markets and increase sales by 20 percent.
