Addressing driver safety via a powerful, cloud-based driving coach app

Published on 1 Feb 2017

Honda R&D needed our app to be durable, scalable, and secure. The Driving Coaching System relies on IBM Watson Data Platform through our use of Cloudant and cognitive capabilities to understand the drivers’ behaviors, skills, and judgment while driving, all in real-time.

Overview

One of the world's largest manufacturers of automobiles and motorcycles, and a pioneer in robotics and other advanced technologies. In the automotive space, Honda's mission is to develop technologies that maximize the joy of driving.

Business need
Markets in Japan and the US are dealing with similar issues when it comes to drivers behind the wheel and an aging population, while at the same time a growing number of new, inexperienced drivers.

Solution
Understanding that of all reported accidents, it's these two groups of drivers that are associated as being the highest at risk, Honda set out to develop the Driving Coaching System. Honda's own driving recognition algorithm is paired with IBM Watson Data Platform, through the use of IBM Cloudant, and IBM Watson, making the Driving Coaching System durable, scalable, and most of all secure. By providing near real-time feedback, drivers receive encouraging words and direction from the system to better protect them while driving.

Benefits
By providing insight into drivers's skills, behaviors, judgements in real-time, the Driving Coach System can protect drivers of all levels by giving them early notification of dangerous driving situations, while also providing encouragement and reassurance to those drivers that need it the most.
