IBM badge program FAQ
Q11. What is an open badge?
An open badge is a digital representation of an outcome or achievement. Open badges refer specifically to badges that adhere to an open standard being led by the IMS Global Learning Consortium for recognizing and validating learning. They are secure, web-enabled credentials that contain granular, verified information employers can use to evaluate an individual’s potential.
Q22. Once I have qualified to earn a badge, do I need to request the badge, or will it be automatically sent to me?
Most badges are issued automatically by the IBM business unit responsible for the badge offering. Some badges are issued almost immediately after completion of the badge activities, while others may take 1-2 weeks before they get issued. Please refer to the source of the badge activity for further clarifications. In a few cases, you may be required to complete a form to request the badge.
Q33. What is the process for claiming my IBM open badge?
Upon clicking the link in the email sent by Acclaim (email@example.com), you will be taken to the Acclaim web site. There you will create an account in a matter of minutes that will allow you to claim the badge IBM has issued to you. Once you have accepted the badge, you will have the ability to easily share with social sites and send emails announcing your achievement.
Q44. How does my credential get displayed as an open badge?
IBM has partnered with Pearson VUE to leverage their initiative known as Acclaim to translate your learning outcomes or experiences into the open badges standard defined by the IMS Global Learning Consortium. This allows the badge earner (you) to accept, manage and share your open badge and the credentials it represents as a digital asset.
Q55. What is Acclaim?
Acclaim is an independent initiative backed by Pearson VUE. Its focal point is an enterprise-class badging platform built in compliance with the IMS Global Learning Consortium open badges standards to support the specialized needs of credential issuers, employers, and professionals. The Acclaim web platform provides a secure means of storage, transport and credential publishing that adds a layer of protection against those who may falsely claim high-stakes credentials.
Q66. What is the relationship between IBM and Acclaim?
IBM has entered into a vendor relationship with Pearson VUE to implement a program for web-enabled credentials displayed as open badges. Acclaim is the web site from which you claim (accept), store and transmit open badges related to your credentials and where those to whom you send your credentials verify the metadata contained within.
Q77. What if I do not want my IBM open badge to be public?
You are in total control of how and when your IBM open badge is shared. All information regarding you and your credentials can be configured within the profile you set up in the Acclaim system. If you do not want your open badge or your profile to be visible to the public, you can make them private. In fact, you may simply discard the open badge email if you do not wish to participate in the IBM open badge program.
Q88. Is there a cost associated with claiming and displaying my IBM open badge?
Accepting, storing, managing and sharing IBM open badges is free for IBM open badge earners.
Q99. How do I prevent someone from copying and using my IBM open badge?
While open badges are simply digital image files, they are uniquely linked to data hosted on the Acclaim platform. This constant linkage to verified data makes them that much more reliable and secure than a traditional paper-based credential.
Q1010. How do I share open badges on social and professional media?
You can share your IBM open badge on popular social and professional networking sites, emails or personal web sites. The visual representation of your IBM open badge will also allow your contacts to verify the credentials that you have achieved. It is a quick and easy way to share your achievements with your contacts. You’ve worked hard to earn your credentials, so why not share this accomplishment with your colleagues?
Every credential and profile on Acclaim has a unique URL that can be embedded on a resume or website. Acclaim also offers seamless integration with several popular social and professional networking platforms for the display of credentials as badges.
In order to display your badge on your LinkedIn profile, log in to Acclaim, select the badge you would like displayed on LinkedIn and then select share. The site will then walk you through connecting to LinkedIn and a series of confirmation steps.
