For a systems programmer, migrating, installing and maintaining an operating system, its related products can be very time consuming; And, because it is resource-intensive, some companies that lack the staff necessary to perform these operations may ultimately be sidetracked from the critical business-related responsibilities.
SystemPac for z/OS not only provides migration support but it also simplifies the way one creates or upgrades a complete software system and helps exploit new z/OS functions in a short period of time.
SystemPac is based on the supplied IODF. It integrates IBM products in a single deliverable and installs all products simultaneously.
SystemPac is enhanced with the default enabling of DB2, CICS TS, IMS and MQSeries -- with the possibility to order none, all or just one. Similar to the integration of IBM products, when ordered:
- SystemPac and the aforementioned subsystems are integrated in the same single deliverable
- the option to separate integrated subsystems by DASD volume and SMP/E environment from the MVS SREL products or from themselves is available and can be separately installed
Also, once ordered, these subsystems are enabled and are automatically started at IPL.
SystemPac is tailored based upon each customer's specified parameters and is designed to exploit new technology which enables the software required to build an e-business Application Server environment. This includes e-busines enabled in IBM default mode, initial setup and customization of WebSphere Application Server and all of its prerequisites, among other things.
Another unique capability of SystemPac is the ability to order some older generally supported products which have been withdrawn from marketing (in other words, no longer orderable via entitled delivery). For example, when the latest release of z/OS becomes generally available in September, the previous n-1 release of z/OS is wthdrawn from marketing and is no longer orderable via no-charge entitled ServerPac and CBPDO a month later in October. As part of fee-based SystemPac, the n-1 release of z/OS is still available for ordering for an additional 8 months after its withdrawal date, typically up through June of the following year. Further, SystemPac reduces install time and effort through its full volume dump which guarantees an IPL-able system upon restore.
Also, there is no need to learn nor use the installation dialogs to perform the installation; However, the Dump by Dataset format gives the option to do so.
In addition, a functional z/OS system restored and IPL'ed within less than a day is highly possible since most of the post installation jobs are run during the manufacturing of the ordered SystemPac. Detailed instructions in the SystemPac installation guide is then provided which informs clients on what has been done and what configuration was setup.
Not only that: SystemPacs include selective follow-on services (SFS) based on the shipped SMP/E CSI profile to help maintain a system over a specified period of time. The SFS are ordered at the same time as the SystemPac and contain critical service that has become available since the SystemPac or previous SFS were built.
When compared to a ServerPac, a SystemPac installs faster, has less skill requirements and errors, more automated, can be ordered with IBM products and subsystems in one integraded deliverable, and most importantly, since SystemPac conforms to the existing installation environment, there is no additional migration cost to a standard configuration.

SubSystemPac is a software package that helps install an individual subsystem (CICS, NCP, IMS, and DB2). It includes target and distribution libraries that are tailored to the customer's product selection and the customization data provided.
All products and applicable service are integrated into the SystemPac before delivery. The SubSystemPac is available in Dump-by-Data-Set format and is installed using the CustomPac Dialogues. The CustomPac Dialogues are included in the package for distribution and loading of the customer's data sets from a target system.
SubSystemPac can include follow-on packages called Selective Follow-On Service (SFS) that would provide a report along with any new applicable HIPER fixes or fixing PE PTFs discovered in the intervening time period.
SubSystemPac can be delivered in copy-by-dataset (IEBCOPY) format or DFSMSdss logical volume dump format.

ProductPac is a "built to order" deliverable -- product(s) ordered are built according to a copy of the customer's SMP/E CSI that are shipped through physical media or the internet.
When a ProductPac is ordered, an option to upgrade the services of all the products which reside in the customer's CSI is available, also known as a full-upgrade ProductPac.
Selected optional products of z/OS 5694-A01 can be ordered and manufactured in a ProductPac, namely, Communications Server Security Level 3 and System Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Security Level 3.
ProductPac is installed using the CustomPac Installation Dialog - the same dialog used for ServerPac installation.
Follow-On Services (SFS) come free with an order of a ProductPac. Once ordered, the customer can then select the 0-3 of SFS and the intervals of 1-180 days between them. SFS contain hipers, PTFs fixing PEs and Reach Aheads which help to stabilize products installed over a specified period of time.

FunctionPac is a software package that helps install a small group of products which perform a common function (i.e. products supporting AFP printing). A main difference between FunctionPac and ProductPac is that a FunctionPac does NOT require CSI information when it is built.
When ordered, the product(s) code and a brand new SMP/E environment (including a Global zone and a TARGET/DLIB pair) will be shipped to the customer; the group of product(s) or function is then installed as a snap-on.
FunctionPac can include follow-on packages called Selective-Follow-On Service (SFS) which provides a report along with any new applicable HIPER fixes or fxing PE PTFs discovered in the intervening time period. The idea is a quick snap-on in an existing environment which preserves the current system's environment.
In addition to magnetic tape media, FunctionPac is orderable on DVD. Installation using DVD requires a workstation with a DVD drive that can read discs in DVD-5 (single-sided, single-layer) format and a network connection to your z/OS system.
RefreshPac is a software preventive service package that can update one or all specific target and dlib zone(s) residing in a TARGET/DLIB CSI. It is customized by providing input from the customer's system through a copy of the SMP/E TARGET/DLIB CSI information. RefreshPac is built and tested with a SMP/E APPLYCHECK where any return codes greater than four are resolved. When ordered, RefreshPac includes a customized Installation Guide and Installation Dialog jobs to install the service.
RefreshPac can include follow-on packages called Selective Follow-On Service (SFS) that provides a report along with any new applicable HIPER fixes or fixing PE PTFs discovered in the intervening time period.
A copy of customer's CSI must be shipped electronically or via physical tape media to IBM. The finished package is shipped through physical media to the customer.
SFS packages provide PTFs to fix high impact or pervasive APARs (HIPERs) and PTFs in error (PEs) released after the customer's CustomPac order or earlier SFS installation. It also includes enhanced HOLD data which can be used by SMP/E to create a service report.
SFS packages are not a standalone offering and are free with the order of any of the CustomPac family of offerings available for z/OS (RefreshPac, ProductPac, FunctionPac, SubSystemPac and SystemPac). A maximum of three SFS packages (more in Europe) can be scheduled at specified intervals. In Europe, a one-time delivery of SFS can be requested through SFS on demand which use the CustomPac Request Entry System or CRES. (Note: SFS on demand does NOT impact SFS schedules).
The purpose of installing SFS upon installation of a deliverable is to maintain the system, products, services or functions which have been installed over a period of time (30, 60 or 90 days, 180 days in Europe), as specified by the customer.
There are two options available for ordering an SFS package:
- using the same physical media as the corresponding packaged offering
- using the new streamlined version delivered over the Web
The streamlined electronic SFS does NOT contain the CustomPac Dialog and its associated installation documentation, and PTFs in untersed format. Now, customers can get the JCL needed for batch JCL installation with its installation guide and all PTFs in a tersed format. When using the electronic ordering system, instead of waiting for the SFS package to be delivered on physical media, an e-mail notification will be sent containing order retrieval instructions. The web retrieval process will result in the batch JCL for a load-and-go installation.
Refresh on Profile (ROP) is the new streamlined version of RefreshPac which provides preventive maintenance delivered electronically to the customer.
ROP allows allows the ordering of preventive maintenance based on a customer's existing SMP/E CSI profile -- this means that customers do not have to send in a copy of their CSI every time an order is placed.
If preferred, a customer can now use batch JCL for load-and-go installation and will still have the option of using the installation dialog. Also, no APPLYCHECK will be done, thus, no APPLY report will be included, resulting in much faster turn around time. To make the process even faster for the customer, instead of waiting for preventive maintenance to be delivered through physical media, an e-mail notification will be sent containing the instructions and the web link to access for order retrieval. Also, the service level of the PTFs and the content of the HOLDDATA will be exactly the same as that for RefreshPac, except that the PTFs will be tersed.
To make the process even faster for the customer, instead of waiting for preventive maintenance to be delivered through physical media, an e-mail notification will be sent containing the instructions and the web link to access for order retrieval. Also, the service level of the PTFs and the content of the HOLDDATA will be exactly the same as that for RefreshPac, except that the PTFs will be tersed.
- ROP can be requested after receiving all SFS from the original order
- ROP does not come with automated SFS -- use "SFS on demand" to order SFS
OMIS is a vehicle for ordering corrective, toleration/coexistence and HIPER/PE maintenance. The maintenance are produced based on a copy of the customer SMP/E profile. This will esnsure that the ordered PTFs are shipped with any necessary pre-req. and co-req. PTFs.
An OMISLOAD is required if the customer profile does not exist at the production center. In such cases, customers are required to send in their SMP/E profiles by tape media or via internet using CSI shipment application available on this web site.
OMIS is not a subscription service. It is a PTF on demand service. An OMIS order can be initiated by an IBM Support Center representative who has done problem determination for the customer and has determined that a PTF or PTFs are required. Customers can also submit an OMIS order from this web site.
