ARMONK, NY - 23 Sep 2005: IBM announced today the availability of IBM Director 5.10, popular with customers thanks to its improved ease of use and open, integrated design. With Director 5.10, companies can more easily manage their complex IT environment and help lower costs through management efficiencies and increased system uptime.

IBM Director is a widely deployed, integrated suite of software tools that provides a consistent, single point of management and automation for complex IT environments. More than a third of IBM xSeries server customers currently use IBM Director to monitor or deploy their hardware.

Among them are Worldspan, a leader in travel technology services for travel suppliers, travel agencies, e-commerce sites and corporations worldwide. Utilizing some of the fastest, most flexible and efficient networks and computing technologies, Worldspan provides comprehensive electronic data services linking approximately 800 travel suppliers around the world to a global customer base.

"The new design of IBM Director 5.10 lets us customize the management tools for our environment, and provide hardware level monitoring to internal operations groups," said Steven Senecal, project manager, server engineering, Worldspan, L.P. "We are very pleased with IBM's enhancements that will make it easier for us to efficiently manage the hundreds of servers our business depends on."

"IBM worked closely with customers to identify the new capabilities they required and built 5.10 accordingly, extending Director's already strong technology to make it more open and integrated," said Jim Northington, vice president, xSeries high performance division, IBM Systems and Technology Group. "As a result, Director 5.10 is better equipped than ever to meet the management challenges of its customers by improving the integration between server, storage and networking management so users can manage their entire infrastructure seamlessly."

Beyond xSeries, the new Director 5.10 extends support to Linux on the IBM zSeries and pSeries systems, as well as the new IBM System z9. Director 5.10 also is the common hardware management component of IBM Virtualization Engine. Director 5.10 supports BladeCenter, iSeries, pSeries, xSeries, zSeries and TotalStorage systems. Director 5.10 also supports heterogeneous environments and complements other offerings such as IBM Tivoli, HP OpenView, CA UniCenter, Microsoft SMS and Microsoft Operations Manager, allowing customers to manage the entire server environment as a single entity, so that the IT staff can focus less on IT management and more on contributing to business results. Director 5.10 also includes the following new features:

"The open design of this new release of IBM Director enables customers to centrally manage our Operating System Portability technology," said Stephen Pollack, CEO of PlateSpin. "As IBM customers continue to expand their data center infrastructure across physical and virtual platforms, the combination of IBM Director and PlateSpin dramatically reduces the complexity of optimizing business services."

"Our customers ask for rich management capabilities that accommodate the needs of their heterogeneous server environment," said Steve Morton, Altiris vice president of product management and marketing. "Altiris will be a first mover in using the IBM Director SDK to integrate Altiris Deployment Solution and make the unique strengths of each available from a single management console. This is a significant step in providing customers with more choice and features."

In addition, Director 5.1 works in concert with and complements the Tivoli elements of the on demand software stack such as Tivoli Provisioning Manager and Tivoli Intelligent Orchestrator for customers who require more automation and business orchestration. This enables customers to automate provisioning and server management tasks, lowering the overall cost of server administration and improving resource utilization and business service availability.
