SOMERS, NY - 22 May 2002: IBM today hailed new reports by two leading analyst firms that show IBM's WebSphere has advanced its market momentum in Internet infrastructure software.

In the report "IBM Closes Gap in 2001 Application Server Market," Gartner Dataquest said IBM WebSphere license revenue grew 71 percent, compared with 23 percent for IBM's closest competitor and 20 percent for the overall market. IBM was reported to have gained nine marketshare points, versus one for BEA.

Gartner Dataquest figures also show IBM as the clear leader in the broader, $2 billion Application Platform Suite market, which includes application servers and other infrastructure technologies that are becoming increasingly important to businesses, such as integration brokers, portals and wireless.

IDC, in its Worldwide Application Server Software Platform Forecast, said "the gap between BEA and IBM has narrowed significantly."

Another leading analyst firm, AMR Research, recently predicted that IBM will take the marketshare lead this year. And as was widely reported in March, Giga Information Group found that WebSphere's marketshare rose to 34 percent last year, from 31 in 2000, tying for the market lead.
