SOMERS, NY & OAKLAND, CA - 24 May 2002: IBM and Versata, a provider of software and services that automate the business logic and processes that power enterprise applications, today announced that a relationship between the two companies has resulted in more than 75 recent customer deployments, including American Management Systems (AMS), DreamWorks SKG and Union Bank of California.

The Versata Logic Suite extends WebSphere Studio development tools by providing a solution to create, execute, reuse and change business logic in a WebSphere infrastructure. Versata's Logic Suite benefits IT managers who are challenged with resource constraints, and who want to dramatically leverage the power of their WebSphere platform and allow integration with existing enterprise, legacy and back-office systems.

Enterprise applications built and managed using the Versata Logic Suite vary from customer management to claims processing. In the financial services sector, Versata and IBM customers have built systems for commercial loan approval, processing and disbursements, and mortgage title and escrow processing. In government, systems include unemployment insurance claims processing and an integrated criminal justice system.

Companies select Versata running on WebSphere because of IBM's application server security, reliability and performance, as well as the Versata Logic Suite's cost-effective rapid development capabilities, increased flexibility, and ease of ongoing application management as business needs change.

"The selection of WebSphere and Versata met our high expectations, enabling us to overcome the traditional challenges that face a development team when creating, or updating an enterprise application: lack of resources, limited J2EE experience and a tight deadline," said Jean-Paul Andrieu, Vice President, Union Bank of California. "Any other combination would have cost us valuable development time and resulted in a less scalable application moving forward."

Other customers with recently deployed applications built on WebSphere using Versata concur that the combined products made a significant impact on the outcome of their projects. "Using Versata with IBM was far and away the best solution in allowing our team to quickly become productive in delivering on our IT objectives. With Versata, we significantly reduced our development cycles, improved productivity and stayed within budgets," said Mike Titmus, CTO and Vice President, AMS State & Local Solutions. "Equally as important, the use of Versata and IBM will allow us to effectively manage and maintain our applications as customer business needs change. We've already started development on several additional projects using this combined solution."

"The power of the Versata/IBM relationship is shown where it counts: in a growing number of large-scale customer deployments," said Dr. Eugene Wong, interim CEO, Versata. "Enterprise companies planning to build large applications need WebSphere as an industrial strength foundation for performance and security, with Versata providing the adaptability and productivity of business logic development and management."

Versata's relationship with IBM is multifaceted, spanning engineering, product management, marketing, sales and professional services. The Versata Logic Server is re-sold alongside WebSphere Studio by IBM's direct sales organization and partners and is available through IBM's Passport Advantage Program, IBM's volume licensing program.

"IBM is pleased to be working with companies like Versata to provide complementary business solutions for our WebSphere Software," said Scott Hebner, director of marketing for IBM WebSphere. "Working with IBM WebSphere, Versata can help organizations transform their core businesses processes into sophisticated e-businesses. Our relationship with Versata is an example of the broad industry support for WebSphere Studio as an application development platform."
