Drew Students Stay Connected With IBM

MADISON, NJ - 25 Nov 2003: Marking its 20th straight year of computer support for students, Drew University is providing IBM ThinkPad R40 notebooks to all incoming students this year, IBM announced today.

"Incorporating notebook technology into their class curriculum and everyday lives helps our students develop skills that will enhance their educational and professional development," says Alan Candiotti, Assistant Vice President of University Technology. IBM ThinkPad notebooks enhance a liberal arts education by improving communications and engaging students in additional interactive learning situations and styles. Notebooks also serve as learning tools to evaluate and creatively process information in the academic environment.

The Princeton Review has ranked Drew No. 12 among the 25 most connected college campuses in the United States. Criteria included wireless access on campus, breadth of the computer science curriculum, and student/computer ratio.

IBM ThinkPad notebooks, equipped with Access Connections, an IBM ThinkVantage Technology, enable students to seamlessly move between wired and wireless environments without having to re-enter configuration settings or reboot. ThinkVantage Technologies are a set of tools designed to simplify network access for students, keep their confidential information secure, ease the process of restoring data and applications after a software failure, and reduce the number of software images maintained by the university's IT department. These technologies reduce the amount of time and resources spent on computing details, so that students, faculty and staff can focus on education.

A 2003 Campus Computing Survey reveals the average ratio of help desk personnel to enrolled students for private 4-year colleges is one IT support person for every 227 students. In contrast, many observers of technology intensive organizations, such as colleges and universities, recommend one IT support person for every 50-75 users.
