RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC - 27 Oct 2003: IBM today introduced two new ThinkPad notebook computers designed to meet the high-performance needs of workstation users, combining the mobility of a ThinkPad notebook with high-speed graphic performance and superior wireless and security capabilities. The ThinkPad T41p and R50p together set a new mobile-workstation standard for engineers, geologists, digital content creators and any professional with industrial-strength graphics-crunching needs.

These new ThinkPad notebooks offer the option of being portable without sacrificing the features and graphics power that workstation users require --- well-suited, for example, for engineers or animators who need to create projects anywhere, increasing flexibility and overall work productivity.

"The expansion of the ThinkPad mobile workstation line reaffirms IBM as a leader in the workstation market," said Bob Galush, vice president of PC product marketing, IBM Personal Computing Division. "The combination of ThinkVantage Technologies such as the new IBM Active Protection System with new ThinkPad workstation models offers people the safety, freedom and flexibility to leave the workplace to create and design whenever and wherever they want."

Speed of Formula One, Safety of a Mini Van
With more users taking their notebook computers into the field, these mobile systems are at risk of being dropped and damaged, whether on the factory floor, in the production trailer or on an airplane. IBM has developed a patent-pending hard drive protection technology to help protect people's data. The IBM Active Protection System, similar to the technology used in automobiles to deploy airbags, uses a microchip on the system board to detect system acceleration (such as in a fall) and responds by temporarily parking the drive's read/write head. This rapid response can help prevent some hard drive crashes that occur in some falls, helping to prevent total data loss and ultimately reduce downtime and warranty costs.

The ThinkPad R50p and T41p mobile workstations feature some of the most advanced technology available in the industry, including the 1.7 GHz (1) Intel Pentium-M processor. These new notebooks also offer some of the strongest graphics capabilities available in a mobile PC, with the ATI Mobility FireGL T2 graphics card with 128MB video RAM for the most demanding 3D applications. Optimized for connectivity, both mobile workstations include Intel Centrino mobile wireless technology, 11a/b/g (2) and Bluetooth wireless, and Gigabit Ethernet. ThinkPad notebooks feature the IBM UltraConnect Antenna built into the display cover for optimal signal reception (3), supporting multiple frequencies to optimize coverage and performance for improved wireless LAN connectivity worldwide.

The ThinkPad R50p has a travel weight of only 6.1 pounds (4), measures 1.5-inches thin (5), has a 15 inch-display and offers up to 7.5 hours (6) of battery life by combining the system battery and battery options.

The ThinkPad T41p is the thinnest and lightest mobile workstation available in the market, weighing in at only 4.9 pounds travel weight and measuring about 1-inch thin, with a 14-inch display, and offers an impressive 8.6 hours of battery life, when a second system battery is used with the standard battery.

The ThinkPad T41p's predecessor, the ThinkPad T40p, is certified by Independent Software Vendors to operate software applications in Mechanical Computer-Aided Design, Electronic Design Automation, Oil and Gas, Digital Content Creation, and Life Sciences. These industry-leading applications include Dassault Systems CATIA, EDS Unigraphics, EDS SDRC I-DEAS, EDS Solid Edge, SolidWorks, AutoDesk Inventor, CoCreate One Space Designer, Landmark, Alias Maya, Avid/SoftImage XSI and Avid/SoftImage 3D. IBM is working with these and other ISVs to certify software applications to run on the ThinkPad T41p and ThinkPad R50p.

Work Where You Want Without Worry
Both mobile workstations announced today feature updated ThinkVantage Technologies including Rapid Restore Ultra and Access IBM 4.0. Rapid Restore Ultra is a one-button disaster recovery solution giving users the ability to restore their system to the previously saved state after a software crash. Access IBM 4.0 software provides easy access to IBM service and support, which can reduce help desk calls and increase employee productivity. Both mobile workstations also feature Access Connections, which saves wireless and wired network settings so that users can easily switch between networking environments.

Additionally, both the ThinkPad R50p and T41p come standard with IBM's Embedded Security Subsystem (ESS), consisting of an integrated security chip and downloadable IBM Client Security Software. IBM PCs provide a secure repository for storing sensitive keys, identity information and confidential data. No other vendor offers this level of security as a standard PC feature.

Pricing and Availability
Both the new ThinkPad R50p and T41p mobile workstation will be available immediately through IBM personal computers are also available through select business partners. Prices for the ThinkPad R50p start at $3,779 and prices for the ThinkPad T41p start at $3,449.
