IBM Grew Double The Rate Of Dell In Intel-Based Server Revenue Year-To-Year, Gartner Reports

IBM's Seventh Consecutive Quarter of Overall Worldwide Server Revenue Share Gain

ARMONK, NY - 28 Aug 2002: IBM's share of worldwide Intel-based server revenue jumped 3.0 points in the second quarter of 2002 compared with the second quarter of 2001--over twice the revenue share gain experienced by Dell, according to the Gartner Dataquest Worldwide server quarterly statistics database, just released.

IBM also gained more revenue share in the sale of Intel-based servers than the HP and Compaq revenue share numbers combined, which dropped by 3.2 points in the second quarter of 2002 compared to the quarter a year ago.

According to Gartner Dataquest, IBM was the only vendor to show growth in worldwide Linux server sales for the second quarter of 2002 over the second quarter of 2001, gaining 12.2 points of revenue share and leading the industry with a 38% share of Linux server revenue in the second quarter. The company also grew revenue share in the sale of combined UNIX and Linux servers with a share gain of .7 points for the second quarter of 2002 compared to the same quarter a year ago.

In addition, IBM's share of total worldwide server revenue grew 1.6 points year-to-year, while the HP and Compaq numbers combined dropped 2.7 points. This represents the seventh consecutive quarter of overall worldwide server revenue share gains, marking gains in every quarter since the launch of eServer. IBM continues to be the leading player in overall worldwide server sales with 29.6 percent revenue share in the second quarter.
