WASHINGTON, DC - 24 Jun 2003: Today at the BIO 2003 Annual Convention, IBM and SAS expanded their strategic alliance to deliver comprehensive information technology solutions for life sciences.

The three-year agreement will enable the two companies to bring together complementary technologies and services to help life sciences customers in North America solve challenges ranging from drug discovery and expedited processing of clinical trial information to product commercialization and customer relationship management.

"SAS has spent the last 27 years serving the life sciences industry, understanding its unique needs and providing powerful data management and analytic software to meet those needs," said Kecia Serwin, general manager of SAS' Life Sciences Organization. "With SAS as a technology partner, enterprises have improved effectiveness and affordability across the entire healthcare delivery system. Now, with the new agreement between IBM and SAS, pharmaceutical, drug discovery, medical device and healthcare organizations have the power of the two leading technology companies in life sciences to support their efforts and deliver results."

New offerings will combine powerful SAS® analytic solutions with IBM's strengths in high-performance computing and storage, business and information integration, and services. For example, SAS® Drug Development, when integrated with IBM's WebSphere® Internet infrastructure software, can help pharmaceutical companies manage clinical trials and drug approval processes more efficiently and potentially reduce time-to-market and time-to-profitability.

Also, SAS® Scientific Discovery Solutions deliver a broad range of analytic applications and tightly integrated discovery research data management tools designed to help organizations leverage information more effectively. Coupled with IBM DB2* Universal Database and DiscoveryLink® data integration software, the new offering will enable researchers to manage, access and query diverse sources of data and types of files for relevant information -- delivered in a consolidated, consistent format -- on promising drug leads, helping them to minimize risk and improve their success rates.

"Many customers are telling us that they need to completely transform their business and R&D processes to get new drugs through the discovery, development and approval processes faster," said Carol Kovac, Ph.D., general manager, IBM Life Sciences. "IBM's longstanding relationship with SAS highlights the synergy between our technologies and services. By extending our strategic alliance to life sciences, we can offer a more complete range of IT solutions that can help customers leverage information more effectively and create more collaborative research and business environments."

The collaboration between IBM and SAS includes the delivery of SAS solutions for customer relationship management (CRM), supplier relationship management (SRM) and IT resource management. These solutions will be combined with IBM services, available on demand, to help pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device companies better manage the ongoing sales and manufacturing of their products.

IBM and SAS will jointly market the new solutions. The companies will also co-develop marketing plans to promote these solutions.

Today's announcement builds on the strategic alliance the companies announced in August 2001 for the financial services and telecommunications industries and a quarter century of successful collaborations.

The SAS strategic alliance is another example of IBM's commitment to go to market with leading independent software vendors through the PartnerWorld® for Developers program. These alliances target industries such as financial services, retail and manufacturing, and solution segments including enterprise resource planning, supply chain management, CRM and business intelligence. The goal is to provide developers with access to new customers and revenue opportunities through IBM's marketing, sales and solutions resources. In return, developers commit to lead with IBM's middleware, server platforms and services.
