Göteborg, Sweden & White Plains, New York - 22 Oct 2002: IBM and Volvo IT today announced plans to reinforce and extend their longstanding relationship. IBM Global Services (IGS), IBM's Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) business unit and Volvo Information Technology (Volvo IT) will join forces in the growing Product Lifecycle Management area, each contributing world-class expertise in their areas of core competency. By teaming together and pooling relevant skills, IBM and Volvo IT are poised to offer industrial companies best-practice methodologies and services to help them win in the marketplace.

The cooperation between the two companies will have an initial scope in the Nordic region. Volvo IT and IBM will collaborate to provide manufacturing customers with a range of PLM solutions and PLM-related services that include consulting, solution design, implementation and integration services around PLM solutions. The PLM relationship will be based on offerings from IBM's Product Lifecycle Management business unit product portfolio, including CATIA, ENOVIA and SMARTEAM product-development and data-management applications developed by Dassault Systèmes and other related solutions.

Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is a strategic business approach for the effective management and use of corporate intellectual capital. IBM's Product Lifecycle Management solution leverages e-business technologies to allow a company's product content to be developed and integrated with all company business processes through to the extended enterprise. PLM enables innovation, improved product development efficiencies, and e-collaboration by all contributors involved in developing and maintaining a product, thus helping manufacturers build better products and drive down costs.

Thomas Reenberg, manager, IBM Global Services Business Consulting Services, Nordic region, said, "Our objective in teaming with Volvo IT is to help companies improve their ability to compete and win in an increasingly competitive industrial world. Volvo IT is an innovator in the automotive industry, particularly in the PLM area where it has pioneered the development and implementation of leading PLM concepts. Their expertise, combined with IBM Global Services' world-class consulting and backed by IBM's total IT solution offering, will help our customers implement a total PLM approach that aims at improving product life cycle and processes."

Ed Petrozelli, general manager, IBM Product Lifecycle Management, added, "Our customers are the driving force behind today's announcement. Momentum is growing in the PLM space and manufacturers are looking for best practices to improve their own business strategies. The cooperation with Volvo IT will give our customers better access to highly competent PLM professionals and IBM technology, allowing them to reap the benefits of PLM. This announcement furthers our efforts to deliver comprehensive business and technology solutions for the automotive sector."

Ulf Nilsson, president and CEO, Volvo IT, added, "Today, we are announcing a new strong team delivering expanded business value to manufacturing companies.
