IBM Introduces New WebSphere Business Integration Solution To Help Healthcare and Insurance Companies Achieve HIPAA Readiness

Somers, NY - 29 Oct 2002: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced it intends to enhance its portfolio of products and services that are helping healthcare and insurance companies prepare to meet the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) mandates.

HIPAA is a set of federal transaction and data protection regulations for healthcare providers, healthcare plans, and healthcare clearinghouses. The HIPAA regulations are designed to simplify electronic data interchange among healthcare industry participants and to protect patient health information.

IBM's WebSphere Business Integration for HIPAA will facilitate the integration and management of business processes specific to the healthcare and insurance industries. It will be part of the WebSphere Business Integration portfolio, which grew 34 percent in the third quarter, and will be available later this quarter.

WebSphere Business Integration for HIPAA will feature built-in HIPAA content to help users automate business processes, such as claims processing transactions, to help achieve HIPAA readiness. The components can help customers implement their HIPAA solutions faster, at a lower cost and risk, and with fewer IT resources.

In the Gartner, Inc. report, Architecture for HIPAA Compliance*, IBM's solutions were listed in the leadership position based on completeness of vision and ability to execute the vision.
