ARMONK, N.Y. - 28 Mar 2003: With just over two weeks remaining for Americans to file taxes, IBM today announced that its eServer systems provide the infrastructure for OnLine Taxes, Inc., a leading e-filer that helps consumers to get tax refunds in as little as two weeks, versus an average, according to OnLine Taxes, of six weeks for returns that are filed through the mail.

OnLine Taxes has replaced products from Dell with IBM eServer xSeries systems that incorporate autonomic reliability features.

According to OnLine Taxes, an average of 150,000 consumers use the web service each year, most of them completing returns in about 20 minutes for less then $10. The majority of their customers receiving a refund can benefit from a fast return by filing online.

IBM eServer systems provide the infrastructure that enables OnLine Taxes to offer this service, which is hosted by IBM Global Services. As an authorized IRS e-file partner and provider, OnLine Taxes wants to help increase e-file tax filing, lower the cost of processing, shorten the time for individual taxpayers to receive refunds, and simplify the tax preparation and filing process. The IRS has a goal of having 80 percent of all individual federal tax returns to be filed electronically by 2007. (1) OnLine Taxes wanted to upgrade its systems to handle a doubling of customer volumes experienced in the past year.

"Our customers trust us with very sensitive, personal tax data. The protection of our customers information is extremely important," said Bill White, Founder and President of OnLine Taxes. "The security and reliability of IBM's xSeries systems and the security offered by IBM hosting services, add to our peace of mind."

"Given the government's goal to increase electronic filing of taxes, OnLine Taxes needed to select an IT infrastructure that could meet current demand as well as future demand that they know is coming," said Leo Suarez, vice president, IBM eServer xSeries. "With the backing of IBM and our eServer technology, OnLine Taxes knows that their infrastructure can handle peaks in demand that come with a hectic tax season."

OnLine Taxes has deployed five IBM eServer x330 systems and two IBM eServer x342 systems all running Microsoft Windows 2000 Server. Four of the eServer systems will power the Web site, two will be database servers and one will act as an e-mail server.

IBM's eServer xSeries systems offer small-to-medium-sized businesses like OnLine Taxes, a scalable pay-as-you-grow server architecture. Bringing key technology to entry-level servers, IBM provides small, growing customers mainframe-like technology on an industry standard platform.
