Beijing, China - 07 Jan 2009: IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced that Bank of Chengdu has chosen the IBM POWER 595 platform to upgrade its core banking system. The bank seeks to build a high performing, reliable and scalable IT infrastructure, which will be used as a foundation for exploration of cross-region markets. The agreement was signed in September 2008.

Chengdu City Commercial Bank, the predecessor of Bank of Chengdu, was founded on December 30, 1996. It was the first city-level commercial bank in Sichuan Province built upon 44 former credit unions in Chengdu. To date, with over 600 branches and operation sites as well as a deposit balance of more than RMB 50 billion, the bank ranks the first among all commercial banks in terms of operation scale in Central and Western China. In May, 2008, Chengdu City Commercial Bank was renamed as Bank of Chengdu as it decided to expand beyond the business and become a bank providing first-class services.

Facing increasingly diverse business challenges as a result of the expansion, Bank of Chengdu needed to upgrade its existing core banking system to support business expansion. After thorough consideration, the bank decided to move the core banking system to two IBM Power 595 servers. The new system will ensure the stable and high performance operation of the bank’s core banking system, which is being used as the foundation of the bank’s flexible and scalable infrastructure.

The IBM Power 595 server provides the best performance in the industry for the most demanding core banking business. The Power 595 server has the reliability, availability and maintainability derived from mainframes, which allows it to monitor, detect and solve the problems without interruption of the operation. With better response time and minimized downtime, the new core banking system will allow the bank to run its data center 27x7.

Bank of Chengdu and IBM have been business partners for eight years. The bank has been using IBM’s product as the foundation of the IT infrastructure.  The bank decided to upgrade its core banking system to IBM Power 595 server because of its outstanding performance, reliability and security, as well as the high quality service offered by IBM.

“IBM will continue to assist Bank of Chengdu to implement its forward-looking business strategy through our groundbreaking technology,” said Mr. David Cheng, vice president, General Business, IBM GCG. “As the beat innovation partner and premier IT service vendor for banks in China, IBM is committed to helping clients grow and transform their business through our most advanced, proven solutions and rich industrial experience.”

In addition to its high performance and high availability, the Power 595 server can scale on demand, so it can support Bank of Chengdu’s long-term value-added business. The new core banking system will run IBM Informix database for Bank of Chengdu’s online transactions, further increasing the bank’s core competency, and setting a solid foundation for it to achieve its goal of “becoming a national player based in Chengdu.”
