SOMERS, NY - 09 Feb 1999: -- IBM today announced DB2* Universal Database for AS/400*, bringing the advanced capabilities of its award-winning database software to the more than 20 million users of the AS/400 business computing system.

With this latest offering, AS/400 customers can use the power of DB2 Universal Database to manage and analyze multimedia content, support sophisticated business intelligence solutions, and streamline their traditional and e-business applications. IBM is the only database vendor to provide complete data management solutions for the highly popular AS/400 operating system, in addition to 21 other user platforms scaling from the laptop to the enterprise.

"DB2 Universal Database for AS/400 is fantastic," said Joe Crenshaw, vice president of Information Systems at The Sports Authority -- one of the world's largest, full-line sporting goods retailers. "It has allowed us to get our warehouse environment up and running rapidly and provides users with the flexibility to do their own analyses without I/S involvement. We simply could not find this level of performance and scalability on other platforms."

To further extend the business intelligence options for AS/400 customers, IBM is partnering with ShowCase Corporation to deliver new online analytical processing (OLAP) and data warehousing tools later this year. ShowCase is a leading provider of data warehousing solutions for the AS/400.

"IBM's goal is to provide customers with the best solutions on the platforms of their choice, letting them take advantage of their existing applications, infrastructure and skills," said Janet Perna, general manager, data management, IBM Software Solutions. "As businesses of all sizes are seeing the benefits of e-business and business intelligence, IBM's delivery of DB2 Universal Database for AS/400, combined with the ShowCase partnership, gives AS/400 customers the flexibility to adapt their software to their business needs -- rather than the other way around."

IBM and ShowCase Corporation
Through an agreement with ShowCase, IBM enhances its business intelligence offerings for small and medium sized companies and addresses the expanding needs of existing AS/400 customers. As part of a technology licensing agreement, ShowCase will develop an AS/400 version of the DB2 OLAP Server which will become an IBM-branded solution, enabling users to access and analyze information in dynamic new ways for proactive decision making. IBM also resells Showcase's Essbase/400 offering. Both the DB2 OLAP Server and Essbase/400 are based on Hyperion Essbase from Hyperion Solutions Corporation.

IBM delivers Visual Warehouse* to help customers build and manage data warehouses. Under the agreement with ShowCase, IBM will also license products to extend IBM's current offerings to meet entry-level data warehousing needs. IBM will partner with ShowCase to provide worldwide technical support to customers for these solutions.

This gives customers and business partners the flexibility to develop common applications which can be deployed across diverse environments found in many enterprises.
