Ana G. Méndez University System Picks Payment Solution From IBM

SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO - 12 Dec 2006: Ana G. Méndez University System has chosen IBM (NYSE: IBM) to develop and install a system that allows students to pay tuition and fees faster and easier.

The 56-year-old university, with more than 35,000 students on five campuses around Puerto Rico, needed a comprehensive cashiering solution that included traditional sale transaction capabilities, as well as the ability to integrate online payment features, including the immediate authorization of debit and credit cards and check verification. The integrated solution also had to work with the pre-existing higher-education student information system.

The IBM solution, consisting of IBM System x servers, WebSphere software, services, point-of-sale systems, and cashiering software from IBM Premier Business Partner, SalePoint, allows the university to collect recurring revenues, including registration fees, tuition and health insurance, through in-office cashiers and also online.

"Our students come to us for higher learning and not to be challenged by the multi-campus location," said Alfonso Dávila, VP of financial affairs at Ana G. Méndez University System. "We needed a centralized cashiering system so our students could pay for tuition, course fees and other charges in an easy and convenient way. With IBM's application we got that, and the scale and flexibility to expand to more services."

As the prime contractor for this solution, IBM provided project management, technical services, WebSphere Application Server software, System x servers and SurePOS 300 point-of-sale equipment. The WebSphere Application Server delivers an infrastructure that is secure, scalable and resilient, ensuring that the solution is available 24/7. The server also improves the security of the entire solution, by automatically removing vulnerable threats while maximizing developer productivity.

To deliver the system, IBM and SalePoint implemented J-Point cashiering software across the university's five campuses. The software provides the ability to read student ID cards, credit cards, debit cards and student bills. It was integrated with Sungard Higher Education's Banner™ student information software and with Banco Popular debit and credit card services.

Students will experience faster convenient service by using infrared touch screens featured on the J-Point point-of-sale system. It also is configured with a customer display and a solution screen that prompts cashiers and students through each step of the transaction. A fast debit and credit card processing service is integrated with the software to eliminate separate standalone credit authorization terminals, reducing merchant services fees. The entire cashiering solution is open and flexible, supporting the technology used on other campus systems.
