ARMONK, NY - 12 Jun 2006: IBM outperformed storage software vendors EMC and Symantec[1] in the first quarter of 2006, according to data released by IDC[2]. According to the new report, IBM grew 41 percent and was the only vendor among the top three to increase its revenue share, resulting in a year-over-year rise in market share of nearly three points, as reported by IDC.

IBM also grew in numerous storage software categories, according to the IDC report. Among all the vendors measured by IDC, IBM showed the top growth rate and the largest share points increase in the Data Protection and Recovery functional market, which includes IBM Tivoli Storage Manager.

When compared with the top three vendors, IDC reported that IBM showed the highest year-over-year growth for three other categories -- Storage Infrastructure Software, Storage Management Software and Storage Replication Software.

"Data is growing at a dizzying pace and storage software is at the core of managing the health and performance of a company's IT infrastructure," said Laura Sanders, vice president, IBM TotalStorage products and solutions. "IBM is a market leader in providing the most comprehensive storage portfolio -- including software, hardware and services -- and our open approach provides customers with freedom of choice while helping them to improve utilization and application availability among multi-vendor systems."

IBM storage virtualization software manages multi-vendor storage systems from such vendors as EMC, Hitachi, Sun, Dell and HP. Last month, IBM introduced a new version of its storage virtualization software, as part of its Virtualization Engine portfolio that includes the ability for customers to virtualize their infrastructures over longer distances and at lower costs.

Today's announcement that IBM achieved the strongest growth among the top storage software vendors, according to IDC, further extends its momentum in the marketplace. IBM also recently announced that according to IDC, it outpaced the overall external disk storage systems marketplace with double digit growth for the fifth consecutive quarter, surpassing EMC, HP and Hitachi in year-over-year worldwide revenue growth for the first quarter of 2006[3].
