CHICAGO, Ill - 20 Jun 2000: -- Omnexus, the customer-focused global e-marketplace for the plastics injection molding industry (, has selected IBM and its strategic alliance with Ariba and i2 Technologies to develop and implement the recently announced e-marketplace.

Omnexus, established by BASF AG, Bayer AG, Dow Chemical, DuPont and Ticona/Celanese AG, will look to IBM, Ariba and i2 to develop the technology that supports the business model. IBM's Global Services will build and host the on-line marketplace, provide new member services, and will provide on-going support and system service. IBM will also provide the business systems infrastructure for the new company. In addition, Mike Silberman from IBM will serve as interim chief information officer for Omnexus while permanent leadership is identified.

To help facilitate 24x7 availability, scalability, privacy and security IBM will use best-of-breed components, including its own WebSphere Commerce Suite, Lotus, Tivoli and MQSeries solutions. Ariba will provide its B2B Commerce Platform and i2 will provide its TradeMatrix solution.

"E-markets are growing worldwide and will have a tremendously positive impact on every industry. However, it takes an end-to-end solution and global implementation provider - such as IBM with our Ariba and i2 alliance - to integrate suppliers and customers to enable an e-market to operate with a full range of functionality, security and efficiency," said Eric Leon, general manager, chemicals and petroleum, IBM Industrial Sector. "We expect Omnexus will help
make buying and selling faster, while cutting costs significantly for participating companies."

"The choice of technology along with speed and thoroughness of implementation is crucial to making Omnexus a success," said Bill Ray, global director e-business at Dow Plastics and the company's representative to Omnexus. "That's why we turned to IBM and its Ariba/i2 alliance. As leaders in building e-marketplaces, they were the best choice to ensure Omnexus success from the first day onward."

Omnexus aims to go on-line by Oct. 1 in North America, three months later in Europe, followed by Asia and the rest of the world in spring, 2001. It will operate as a separate independent business from the start. The size of this market is estimated to be in the $50-billion range.

Omnexus will actively seek additional reliable, quality resin suppliers and other suppliers in the value chain to sell their products via this new marketplace. It will significantly simplify business transactions, allowing customers to choose from a wide range of products and services from participating resin manufacturers, additional suppliers and distributors on the same platform. This is expected to reduce transaction costs in the purchasing and selling processes.

Omnexus will offer a range of functionality including a catalog with full product information, comparisons across products, order tracking, electronic billing and payment, as well as on-line customer support.
