Sydney, Australia - 03 Aug 2000: IBM Global Services Australia today announced that they have selected a heritage listed building in Harris Street, Pyrmont for their Centre for IBM e-Business Innovation which was announced last week. The Centre is expected to be completed by the end of the year and will house over 400 e-business experts within three years.

The building selected, in the heart of Sydney's rapidly developing e-business district, was once a wool store, and is approximately a century old. The historical exterior will be left intact, while the existing internal features will be incorporated into the overall design. Leading architects Geyer Design have been commissioned by IBM to design an interior to bring out the best features of the building, juxtaposing the old with the new, while respecting its heritage classification.

When complete, the Centre will give the feeling of belonging to a special community, like a university campus or a neighbourhood village. At the heart of the community is the exchange of creative and business ideas amongst customers, employees and partners.

IBM and Geyer Design will together create a new age workplace that will be fitted out with the latest technology while being a wireless workspace designed to foster collaboration and innovation. Groups of employees, customers and partners will be able to adapt their workspace within the free form centre as projects require. The floor plan design incorporates areas for employee relaxation and discussion, including an Internet cafe for those working at Centre. It will also feature research lab facilities for e-business security, network services, user-centered design and mobile computing.

Over 400 people will ultimately be housed in the Centre, including Australia's leading e-business graphic designers, consultants and technology experts. These people will include existing IBMers as well as graduates and experienced professionals.

IBM will invest $23 million in developing the centre over the next five years.
The centre will position IBM to deploy skills on leading-edge projects for customers in the areas of e-commerce, Customer Relationship Management, Supply Chain Management and Business Intelligence. The centre will facilitate e-business work not just at the centre, but across Australia and New Zealand and Asia Pacific.
