IBM Opens First Research Lab in Africa

On the streets of Nairobi, Kenya, IBM business consultant Shadrack Kioko captures data on road conditions and traffic congestion in the capital city. IBM announced its first research lab in Africa, which will collaborate with government, academia and industry on smarter ways to manage critical city services such as transportation and water, which remain the biggest challenges facing African cities. The new IBM research lab will develop public sector solutions based on social networking, mobile computing and analytics technologies, as well as foster local technology skills in the region.
