Auckland, New Zealand - 27 Jul 2016: IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced today that Portland Software, one of New Zealand’s fastest growing technology companies, has created a fully integrated employee benefits administration platform on IBM Cloud. The new platform, Belong, is built on SoftLayer and enables employers to deliver a complete suite of employee benefits from categories such as retail, food, health and beauty, as well as access to a range of financial services offers and employer funded benefits like health insurance.

Employer funded employee benefits can be costly to administer because they require frequent adjustments as individual employees join, leave or as their circumstances change. As a result, most benefit programmes have traditionally been available only to larger corporations. Belong’s integration with payroll providers and self-service portal makes it cost-effective for smaller employers to offer employee benefits cover, creating a new market for brokers.

Portland has moved all its systems to IBM Cloud, replacing a combination of on-premise and outsourcing to AWS, attracted by a straight forward pricing model and bundled features such as data centre to data centre data transmission at no cost. The enterprise grade security of SoftLayer’s ‘bare metal’ offering was critical given the highly sensitive nature of Belong’s personal and financial data. IBM Cloud’s global footprint has also supported Portland’s expansion throughout Asia Pacific, especially into markets with tough data sovereignty laws.

“Employee benefits schemes have traditionally been costly for insurers and employers to manage because the need for regular adjustments made them difficult to automate and vulnerable to errors,” says Greg Woolley, CEO, Portland Software. “Using IBM Cloud, Belong overturns the traditional model, eliminating costly and error prone data transfers, and providing administrators with a single data source.”

“Portland Software is committed to ongoing innovation to the employee benefits market, allowing merchants and insurers to make greater use of their rich data sets and compete on product offerings and service rather than just price,” says Andrew Kupetz, CTO, Cloud Computing, IBM Australia & New Zealand. “Running on IBM Cloud means Portland can achieve scale quickly and cost effectively, while consistently offering the highest security settings in each new market.”

The Belong platform includes benefits and product management, member and group administration, policy administration and billing. Portland’s success in developing a broad range of products without adding to overheads contributed to its place in the 2015 Deloitte Technology Fast 500.
