Full biography

Kerry Purcell is the Managing Director of IBM Australia and New Zealand. Before being appointed to his current position, Kerry was Managing Partner, IBM Global Business Services, Japan, for over three years.

In this role, he was responsible for leading IBM’s consulting, systems integration and applications businesses in Japan. During this time, Kerry drove the transformation and accelerated shift to cloud, analytics and mobile-enabled industry solutions. This business has grown over several consecutive quarters, and has contributed to many aspects of the Japan business and government environment, including working with several cities, government and environmental agencies to help in the reconstruction of the Tohoku Region post the 2011 Tsunami.

Before joining IBM, Kerry was Head of Asia Pacific for Xchanging, a UK business process outsourcing company. Previously, he served as Corporate Vice President and Managing Director of Asia and Japan for Electronic Data Systems (EDS; presently HP Enterprise Services), and developed their business for manufacturing, banking, insurance, and retail industry customers.

Prior to joining EDS, Kerry served as General Manager Banking & Finance of Telstra managing key client relationships. Previously, he joined Telecom New Zealand (TNZ) as a Senior Investment Analyst and developed a number of structured finance and M&A activities. Most noteworthy was the establishment of The Southern Cross Cable Company, which has been TNZ’s most successful investment to-date.

Kerry was born in New Zealand and has worked extensively in Asia, Europe, NZ and Australia. He studied linguistics on a Language Scholarship to Kyoto Sangyo University 1982-’83, earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree at The University of Canterbury, New Zealand, in 1987, and obtained his MBA from The Cranfield Business School, UK, in 1993. He is married with 3 teenage children.
