Each week, IBM will highlight a story from around the world where IBM engineers are collaborating with clients, business partners, ISV's and education institutions to bring the latest technology to the market in new and innovative ways. |
Did you know...
...in 2008 nearly 38.8 million digital televisions will ship to consumers, which is an increase from 8.6 million in 2007?
The astronomical growth in digital TV has not only opened up doors for new kinds of entertainment technologies, it has allowed consumers to be more discerning about the quality of product they purchase. Video-powered broadcast solutions provider Broadcast International has been able to address both of these issues, thanks to a new licensing deal with IBM. The agreement covers BI's patented CodecSys video compression software running on IBM's Cell Broadband Engine multi-core processor and the IBM BladeCenter QS21 server. The combined technologies will make it possible for cable, satellite or IPTV providers to deliver live HDTV at compression levels four-to-six-times higher than is currently possible.
