  History

We used to use PCs as our main computers for teaching. By using the PC, we found that they were not flexible or easy to manage since we have so many tools we use for teaching.

We had to install all these tools on each individual PC and update it, change it every time we had a workshop. It was quite a difficult task considering that we would have hundreds of PCs to manage for each workshop. In addition, by using individual PCs, we could not provide anywhere / anytime learning for the students since there was no way to connect each PC to the Internet.

Using the PC did not allow the students to experience an enterprise level computing facility.

  Virtualized Servers

Now with the System z, we can have what we call Virtual IT Playground for the students where they can study and learn anywhere, anytime on his or her individual virtual server. We believe that the virtualization is the future of the server infrastructure. We think this is a flagship platform for our IT students. We want them to learn how to manage this virtualization technology.

By using the System z, they can have the experience of world class technology.

They can use it for doing their group projects by connecting their own servers together, becoming a system. On top of that, by using the System z, the students gain the experience and skills of working on an enterprise-level computer. I think that's very important for the future of the students.

  Consolidation

The System z provides us a great computing infrastructure to create the server consolidation. It provides us the flexibility to manage the computing infrastructure for our training courses. It makes life easier because we can install many servers and many tools on an individual server with the use of System z.

In addition to finding that it takes up less space, we found that the heat from System z actually is less than our individual box server.
