Focused on cost reduction, new revenue sources and network infrastructure, the telecommunications industry has undergone extraordinary change. Telecommunications monopolies held consumer loyalty through a lack of choice and options. The advent of competitive alternate technologies (cable, wireless) enabled greater choice, stimulated greater product and service innovation and increased price elasticity.

Today, many telecommunications service providers continue to experience 39% rate consumer turnover and defection. Customer expect innovation at exponential rates. Responsiveness and high rates of innovation are only achievable if the fundamental architecture of the service providers evolves too: from large silo-based operations that were once quite static into organizations that have both scale and speed.

The challenge is to release investments once required to prop up slow and sluggish operations so that they can be poured into more productive areas – product and service innovation – and/or released to the bottom line. This is no easy feat, particularly for an industry whose consumers increasingly have zero tolerance of service or security failure.
