z/OS.e V1.8 is the last release of z/OS.e. It is no longer orderable. IBM plans to withdraw service for z/OS.e V1.8 in September 2009. Customers with z/OS.e should consider z/OS with the IBM System z New Application License Charge (zNALC) software pricing methodology.

z/OS.e is only for new workloads. Customers who choose z/OS.e are not authorized or licensed to run traditional workloads, languages and/or compilers on z/OS.e, including but not limited to:

  • CICS
  • IMS
  • COBOL
  • Fortran
  • PL/I
  • IBM VisualAge® PL/I

Pre-compiled COBOL DB2 stored procedures and other pre-compiled COBOL applications using the Language Environment® preinitialization interface (CEEPIPI) are supported.

z/OS.e supports the execution of select Precompiled PL/I and VisualAge PL/I applications. The MICR/OCR element of z/OS is not licensed for use with z/OS.e and customers are not permitted to use this element with z/OS.e.

The following elements and features of z/OS are not licensed or authorized for use with z/OS.e and are not functional in z/OS.e. Customers are not authorized or permitted to use these elements and features with z/OS.e:

  • IBM BookManager®_ READ/BUILD
  • IBM GDDM® Base and
  • GDDM-PGF feature
  • GDDM-REXX feature
  • BDT File-to-File

Customers must use the level of JES2 or JES3 that is delivered with z/OS.e. Customers are not permitted to use lower levels of Language Environment in z/OS.e. Additionally, the following are not functional and not licensed or authorized for use with z/OS.e. Customers are not permitted to use them with z/OS.e:

  • Language Environment's use of RunTime Library Services (RTLS)(removed in z/OS 1.6)
  • Language Environment Library Routine Retention (LRR)
  • Language Environment Compatibility
  • Pre-initialization for C and PL/I

The following DB2 features are not functional with z/OS.e. Customers are not permitted to use these features with z/OS.e:

  • IBM DB2 QMF™ Host
  • DB2 QMF HPO

An additional restriction on using z/OS.e is that only eight concurrent TSO sessions will be permitted.
