Overview
The Planning and Migration Assistant (PMA) helps you to identify products
that are currently installed on your system and provide planning information
that can be useful in migration.
PMA provides reports that you can customize to show:
- Target, Distribution, and Global CSI Zone Names
- Order numbers in your CustomPac Order Inventories
- Products installed in a set of target zones
- Comparative information about products currently installed on your system and
the highest level of the products currently available for ordering
- Comparative information about products currently installed on your system and
more current levels you might be migrating to
PMA is provided as part of SMP/E.
PMA uses a
Software Information Base
to provide information about IBM products, their functional history and progression,
and other data further describing products available in z/OS and the other
subsystems - including CICS, DB2, IMS, and NCP.
The Software Information Base is updated regularly to reflect the most current data
about announced products.
Software Information Base
Data in the Software Information Base is provided as reference
information for the Planning and Migration Assistant analysis and reports.
A product's progression can change as new products are announced, therefore,
the Software Information Base is updated regularly to reflect the most recently
announced products.
The Software Information Base is installed with the Planning and Migration
Assistant, however, you should get the most current level of the
Software Information Base before beginning any migration planning activities.
You can download updates for the Software Information Base
or get them by ordering the latest PTF.
The download file is updated weekly and a PTF containing the latest level
is generated monthly.
Download the Software Information Base or order the PTF
Right-click on the download link and select "Save as" to download and store the
Software Information Base:
Download Software Information Base (35MB)
To find and order the latest PTF for the Software Information Base, use the
IBM Technical help database or follow your local procedures for ordering service.
You can also search RETAIN to identify the Software Information Base PTFs using
the search argument PMAIB (PMA Software Information Base).
Note:
The Software Information Base is approximately 35Mb and exceeds the size limits
supported by IBMLINK.
You can install the download file for the Software Information Base either
as a PTF/APAR, using SMP/E APPLY or you can invoke the file as a self-executing
REXX exec which does not use SMP/E.
Both methods are supported using the single download file.
Invocation of the REXX exec prompts you for installation data using an ISPF panel
interface.
Note that the REXX exec method does not generate SMP/E entries in your CSI.
You can download either directly to the z/OS host or to a workstation.
If you receive the file on a workstation, upload the file to the host.
Be sure to treat the file as binary data.
After the file is on the host, you can APPLY it as a PTF or invoke the file as a
REXX exec.
