What is Supplementary Toolkit for z/OS?

Supplementary Toolkit for z/OS provides miscellaneous utilities that are commonly used on other platforms, and now on the z platform as well. For this release, bzip2 is provided. The following additional utilities are available through the service stream:

  • cURL 7.16.1 (APAR: OA22944)
  • sudo 1.7.2p2 (APAR: OA34949)

bzip2 is a powerful data compressing utility. It is widely used on other platforms in the industry and has now been made available to run on z/OS UNIX System Services. Its usage syntax is intuitive and therefore makes it attractive for a wide audience. As with most compression utilities, it provides both compression and decompression capabilities.

cURL is an open source tool that can transfer data from or to a server or servers, using one of the supported protocols (HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, TFTP, DICT, TELNET, LDAP or FILE). The command is designed to work without user interaction. cURL offers a variety of useful functions like proxy support, user authentication, FTP upload, HTTP post, SSL connections, cookies, file transfer, resume, and more. It is a command-line UNIX application, and runs in the z/OS UNIX System Services environment.

sudo (su "do") is an open source tool that allows a system administrator to delegate authority in order to give certain users (or groups of users) the ability to run some (or all) commands as a superuser or another user, while providing an audit trail of the commands and their arguments. It is a command-line UNIX application, and runs in the z/OS UNIX System Services environment.

cURL check bundle file tool (unsupported)

This tool is a shell script that can be used to check the currency of a certification authority (CA) bundle file used by cURL for z/OS. See the shell script prolog for usage information. Click here to download the shell script. The shell script is not supported by IBM, and is provided as is and without warranty.
