IBM Tivoli System Automation for z/OS (SA z/OS) plays an important role in building the end-to-end automation of the IBM Smarter Systems for Smarter Planet initiative and is designed to automate I/O, processor, and system operations.
System operations
Running as a NetView application, system operations automates many system console operations and selected operator tasks such as startup, monitoring, recovery and shutdown of z/OS subsystems, components, and applications.
Processor operations
Processor operations helps operators manage more systems with greater efficiency. One operator, in one location, can initialize, configure, monitor, shut down, and recover multiple systems—both local and remote—and respond to a variety of detected conditions.
Remote System z hardware can now be controlled via Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) without any additional PC or networking other than an existing processor LAN.
I/O operations
I/O Operations allows operators to make operational changes to z/OS-based I/O configurations—ESCON and FICON—in a safe, system-integrated way. To help operators make those changes or perform I/O problem determination, it also provides displays with accurate, up-to-date information that is extracted directly from the active I/O configuration of an enterprise.
I/O operations can manage FICON directors and support Dynamic CHPID management (DCM). Note, however, that DCM is not possible for FICON.
Policy-based self-healing
Automation policy can be shared or cloned across the enterprise, which can reduce complexity, implementation time, coding, and support effort. You can add new resources or systems without rewriting scripts. The policy can now be built more easily using more cloning variables and more predefined and self-configured message rules.
Integration
SA z/OS, a NetView application, integrates with Tivoli enterprise solutions such as Tivoli Enterprise Console (TEC) and Tivoli Business Systems Manager (TBSM). TBSM can act as status observer for SA z/OS-monitored resources.
A single NetView is designed to provide seamless automation of both system and network resources.
SA z/OS includes improved support for the leading disaster recovery solution, the Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS), which uses SA z/OS as the automation platform.
SAP high availability automation
The integrated SA z/OS solution for SAP high availability automation combines the concepts of automation, high-availability, and transparent failover. Today's complex environment offers the SAP systems administrator significant monitoring and management challenges. SAP on System z: Business Continuity for SAP on IBM System z (PDF, 6MB) discusses the solution that covers current SAP and related components that run on z/OS.
