HCD 5.1 to be available for MVS/ESA SP Version 4.3 Users
At recent GUIDE and SHARE meetings users told us that they want to profit from the enhanced functionality of HCD 5.1 without having to migrate their whole MVS environment.
To allow the majority of MVS/ESA Version 4 users to take advantage of the new HCD functionality, which contains significant improvements in the area of usability and productivity, HCD 5.1 will be made available as HCD Usability Feature for MVS/ESA SP Version 4.3.
Graphical configuration reports based on the configuration data in the IODF can be printed or viewed. Jumping between the graphical display and the related dialog object list is possible. Printed graphical reports can be used as a base for future configuration planning.
Copy configuration data allows you to copy selected objects together with their dependent objects and I/O attachments within the same IODF or across IODF boundaries. If objects already exist in the target IODF, the data will be merged. This function has long been requested and will considerably improve productivity.
Migration enhancements are available through an improved mapping algorithm resulting in fewer duplicate device numbers. In addition it is possible to update existing parts of a configuration in an IODF (processor and operating system definitions) with IOCP, MVSCP, and HCPRIO control statements.
HCD together with ESCON Manager allows you to save/migrate ESCON Director File configurations. Additional enhancements ease the definition of switches.
The restructured primary task selection panel as well as enhancements to the GOTO command improve navigation.
Channel path type change from parallel to ESCON (or vice versa) considerably improves usability as does enhanced support when defining control units to multiple processors. And there is more.
For more information see HCD Newsletter # 2 or the HCD 5.1 User's Guide.
The HCD Usability Feature allows you to define the new S/390 Parallel Transaction Server environment, however, the capabilities of the S/390 Parallel Transaction Server cannot be utilized with MVS/ESA SP Version 4.3.
Installing the HCD Usability Feature on top of MVS/ESA SP Version 4.3 does not result in additional migration effort for the user. However, the following must be kept in mind:
- The HCD Usability Feature supports both 4.3 IODFs and 5.1 IODFs. As long as no update to the 4.3 IODF is done, HCD keeps the original IODF structure.
- Updates to the IODF will result in converting the IODF to a 5.1 level. This IODF can be used by any MVS SP4.x system without the HCD Usability Feature to IPL from. However, dynamic activation from these systems must be done via the ACTIVATE command.
For more details consult the HCD 5.1 User's Guide.
