The zEnterprise System is a revolutionary combination of mainframe and distributed computing designed in one system. The zEnterprise™ 196 — one of the industries fastest and most scalable enterprise systems — combined with the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX), and the unique zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager, brings integration of governance to manage risk across the infrastructure, integration that will help accelerate insight for the business, integration of processes to increase business agility, and integration of people to enable new business innovation.
The zEnterprise 196 (z196) is a workload optimized system, that can scale up (over 52,000 MIPS in a single footprint), scale out (80 configurable cores) and scale within (specialty engines, cryptographic processors, hypervisors) executing in an environmentally friendly footprint. And the z196 is designed to work together with system software, middleware and storage to be the most robust and cost effective data server. The z196 offers an industry standard PCIe I/O drawer for FICON and OSA-Express multimode and single mode fiber optic environments for increased capacity, infrastructure bandwidth, and reliability.
The z196 offers a total of 96 cores running at an astonishing 5.2 GHz, and delivering up to 40 percent improvement in performance per core and up to 60 percent increase in total capacity for z/OS®, z/VM®, and Linux on System z® workloads compared to its predecessor, the z10™ EC. The z196 has up to 80 configurable cores for client use. The cores can be configured as general purpose processors (CPs), Integrated Facilities for Linux (IFLs), System z Application Assist Processors (zAAPs), System z Integrated Information Processors (zIIPs), additional System Assist Processors (SAPs), Internal Coupling Facilities (ICFs) or used as additional spares.

Clipper Group examines secure and timely mobile access to critical data
1 If ordering a zAAP or a zIIP, one or more general purpose processor (CP) per the specialty engine is required. One CP can satisfy the requirement for either or both of the specialty engines.
2 No IFL is required unless ordering an IFL only server—model capacity identifier 700. If you order a 700 no CP is orderable.
3 ISC-3 Peer mode only
4 Assuming feature HCA3-O. Maximum of 32 1x IFB ports on M15; Maximum of 16 12x IFB ports on M15
5 Excludes the standard fixed size of 16 GB HSA
6 z/OS V 1.10 is required to support an ensemble.
7 On November 1, 2011, IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer was withdrawn from marketing for new build and MES zBX. It has been replaced with IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS (IDAA), a new workload optimized, appliance add-on that attaches to the zEnterprise System.
8 The blades for BladeCenter PS701 Express blade, BladeCenter HX5 blade and DataPower XI50z can be shared in the same BladeCenter chassis—note that DataPower XI50z blades are “doublewide” and use two slots. They can be mixed in the same zBX with IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer blades—but not in the same BladeCenter Chassis. Total zBX capacity cannot exceed 112 total blades.
