Internal LAN connectivity is designed for high-speed, secure virtual communication when consolidating servers onto IBM Z mainframes. The workload can be Internet Protocol-based (IP) or non-IP based, supported by a fully integrated hardware feature to provide a virtual local area network (LAN) optimized for your mainframe.

Eliminate physical cabling

HiperSockets provide users with high-speed "virtual LAN attachments with minimal system and network overhead. They eliminate the need for physical cabling or external networking connection between these virtual points.

Gain availability: With HiperSockets, there are no network hubs, routers, adapters, or wires to break or maintain. The reduced number of external components greatly improves availability.

Gain significant value in server consolidation: The more virtual servers consolidated onto the platform and connected via HiperSockets, the greater your savings potential for costs associated with external servers and their associated networking components.

Support two transport modes: Support for layers including Layer 2 (link layer) and Layer 3 (network or Internet Protocol (IP) layer). Traffic can be IPv4 or IPv6, or non-IP such as AppleTalk, DECnet, IPX, NetBIOS, or SNA.

Utilize virtual adapters with internal shared memory features

Internal shared memory (ISM) is a virtual channel like IQD for HiperSockets where a virtual adapter is created in each OS. Using the Shared Memory Communications (SMC) Direct protocol, the memory is logically shared, while the network is firmware provided.

Transparently use ISM: As a hybrid solution, SMC-Direct (SMC-D) protocol allows TCP socket applications to transparently use ISM.

Choose from flexible connection options: The TCP connection used to create the SMC-D connection can be established over either a HiperSocket or an OSA adapter.

Improve time to value: SMC-D allows existing sockets-based TCP/IP applications to transparently reap the low-latency benefits of RDMA without requiring programming changes.

Preserve critical operations: The TCP connection preserves many critical existing operational and network management features of TCP/IP.

Speed communication

OSA-Express6S is designed for fast, reliable and stable high-speed communication either within the enterprise backbone, or between campuses to connect server farms, and consolidate file servers onto an IBM Z mainframe.

Gain enterprise quality of service: A single OSA port can be shared among operating system images that are running in logical partitions or among IP network stacks in these logical partitions.

Utilize advances in hardware and TCP/IP: Continual advances in hardware and TCP/IP networking capabilities reinforce the integral role of the mainframe for your on demand operating environment

Optimize traffic flow: OSA can send packets between logical partitions or IP stacks among which it is shared, without sending the IP packets out on the physical LAN.

Access the newest generation of Ethernet: A new generation of Ethernet features has been introduced for use in the Peripheral Component Interconnect Express Generation 2 (PCIe Gen3) I/O drawer which is supported by an 16GBps PCIe Gen3 host.
