Prerequisites
Hardware support for zIIP
The zIIPs may be purchased and installed on System z10 and System z9 servers.
For z9 ECs and Hardware Management Consoles (HMCs) shipped before May 26th 2006, additional MCL maintenance and HMC Driver is required. All z9 EC and z9 BC models shipped on or after May 26th 2006 will come with appropriate maintenance applied. The listing of required MCLs and Driver levels are available now through Resource Link under the Exception Letters category in the Fixes tab. MCLs are designed to be applied concurrently. Contact IBM service personnel for further information.
z/OS support for zIIP
z/OS V1.7 support for zIIP is offered via web deliverable plus PTFs. IBM System z Integrated Information Processor Support for z/OS and z/OS.e V1.6/V1.7 Web Deliverable is located here. This Web deliverable contains FMID JBB77S9 for z/OS and z/OS.e V1.6, and FMID JBB772S for z/OS and z/OS.e V1.7.
For z/OS V1.8 and higher support for zIIP is integrated in the base.
DB2 support for zIIP
DB2 for z/OS V8 was the first IBM exploiter of zIIP and supports zIIP with enabling PTFs (the DB2 enabling PTFs are identified in the PSP Buckets described in the web deliverable listed in the section "z/OS support for zIIP"). Support for zIIP is integrated and delivered with DB2 9 for z/OS.
IBM DB2 for z/OS Version 8 or DB2 9 DB2 utilities enables portions of sorting of fixed-length records using IBM's memory object sorting technique to be eligible for the zIIP. This capability is available on z/OS V1.11, z/OS V1.10 with the PTF for APAR PK85856, and requires DB2 Version 8 or DB2 9 with the PTF for APAR PK85889. A portion of DB2 for z/OS V8 utility functions used to maintain index maintenance structures (LOAD, REORG, and REBUILD INDEX) that typically run during batch, can be redirected to the zIIP. A portion of DB2 for z/OS V8 and DB2 9 DB2 utilities for sorting fixed-length records using IBM's memory object sorting technique can be eligible for zIIP.
Once implemented, DB2 zIIP execution is expected to be transparent and automatic to applications.
z/OS XML System Services
z/OS XML System Services support of zIIP and zAAP specialty engines is being rolled out over time.
z/OS Communication Server support for zIIP
The zIIP-assisted IPSec was available August 2007 on z/OS V1.8 with PTFs:
- z/OS V1.8 Communications Server PTFs UK27062 and UK27063
- z/OS V1.8 PTF UA34582
The following configuration statements within the TCP/IP profile trigger z/OS Communications Server to request z/OS to direct this IPSec Enclave SRB processing to available zIIPs.
- IPCONFIG IPSECURITY (enabling IPSec support for IPv4) or
- IPCONFIG6 IPSECURITY (enabling IPSec support for IPv6), and
- GLOBALCONFIG ZIIP IPSECURITY (enables eligible work to be directed to zIIP)
There are no anticipated changes needed for an application that utilizes z/OS Communication Server for zIIP-assisted IPSec. zIIP-assisted IPSec is integrated in z/OS V1.9 and higher.
z/OS Global Mirror
z/OS Global Mirror (zGM, formerly XRC Extended Remote Copy) is enhanced to allow most z/OS DFSMS SDM (System Data Mover) processing associated with zGM/XRC to be eligible to run on the zIIP. This capability is available with: z/OS V1.10, or z/OS V1.9 with PTF UA39510 and V1.8 with PTF UA39509; IBM System Storage DS8000, or any storage controller, supporting z/OS Global Mirror; and IBM System z9 or System z10 server with zIIP(s). This function is enabled via the zGM PARMLIB setting zIIPEnable(YES).
zIIP Assisted HiperSockets for large messages
zIIP Assisted HiperSockets for large messages requires IBM System z10 and z/OS V1.10 in an LPAR (not as a guest under z/VM). It also requires the following configuration statements to enable HiperSockets Multiple Write and zIIP enablement:
- To enable Multiple Write, use GLOBALCONFIG IQDMULTIWRITE
- To enable zIIP, use GLOBALCONFIG ZIIP IQDIOMULTIWRITE
There are no WLM (enclave) configuration changes required. There are no anticipated changes to applications needed.
Scalable Architecture for Financial Reporting
The Scalable Architecture for Financial Reporting is a solution from IBM Global Business Services. IBM Global Business Services can architect the solution to exploit the zIIP. See you IBM Global Business Services representative for more details. Requirements include:
- Contract for services with IBM Global Business Services
- Finance transformation or business intelligence project
- License for SAFR Intellectual Property Services Component (IPSC)
- Annual software maintenance services
- z/OS V1.8 or later (with zIIP-enabling PTF if zIIP is desired)
- DB2 for z/OS or DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows V8 or later (Used as data source and meta data repository)
- DFSORT or equivalent
- System z9 or z10 (with optional zIIP(s))
z/OS CIM Server
z/OS V1.11 is updated so z/OS CIM server processing is eligible to run on the System z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP). The requirement is z/OS V1.11.
zAAP on zIIP capability
z/OS V1.11 is enhanced with a new capability that can enable System z Application Assist Processor (zAAP) eligible workloads to run on System z Integrated Information Processors (zIIPs). This function can enable you to run zIIP- and zAAP-eligible workloads on the zIIP. Additional terms and conditions apply, see the FAQ for more information.
Requirements include:
- System z9 or z10 with zIIPs
- No zAAPs, the zAAP on zIIP capability is unavailable if z/OS is in an LPAR and zAAPs are installed on the machine
- zIIP to CP ratio of no more than 1:1, the number of zIIPs cannot exceed the number of CPs.
- z/OS V1.11, and z/OS 1.9 and 1.10 (with PTF for APAR OA27495).
- New ZZ system parameter : ZAAPZIIP=YES or NO (or ZZ=YES or NO)
YES = enabled
ISV support for zIIP
The zIIP exploitation interface is available to ISVs. ISVs may choose to have their software products measure and monitor zIIP activity or may choose to have their products exploit the zIIP by redirecting a portion of their workloads to the specialty engine itself. Please see your ISV for details on their support of zIIP.
