zIIPs are orderable on System z10 EC (by feature code 6815) and on System z9 (by feature code 7815 on the z9 EC and feature code 7868 on the z9 BC). To place your order or for more information, please work through your normal IBM Sales Channel.
You may order zIIPs up to the number of permanently purchased general purpose processors (CPs) on a given machine model. This requirement is at a server level, so you can have an LPAR with more zIIPs than general purpose processors, as long as there are enough general purpose processors in the entire server to meet the one for one requirement. One general purpose processor can be shared by BOTH a zAAP and a zIIP to satisfy the ordering restrictions of each.
For the IBM System z10 and IBM System z9 servers:
- All zIIP specialty engines run at full capacity
- Use the 1 to 1 ratio for planning for zIIPs on the machine - one CP must be installed with or prior to any zIIPs being installed. That means the total number of zIIPs installed may not exceed the total number of CPs including Capacity Marker CP capacity.
For the IBM System z9 109 (z9-109):
- The z9-109's name is changed to z9 EC. Review the information under z9 EC.
Capacity on Demand
When your business needs short term additional capacity System z Capacity On Demand settings can deliver it. You may need the flexibility to rapidly increase or decrease your computing capability as requirements change. This may mean a permanent capacity increase for planned growth or a temporary capacity increase for seasonal or unpredictable peak periods. IBM provides the capability to quickly and nondisruptively activate "extra" processor capacity that is built directly into System z9 and System z10 products, IBM Capacity Upgrade on Demand (CUoD) for a permanent increase of processing capability, and IBM On/Off Capacity on Demand1 (On/Off CoD) for a temporary capacity increase that lets you revert to your previous processing level whenever you wish.
System z Capacity on Demand is for not only general purpose processors, but zIIPs and zAAPs as well. See your IBM representative to see if one of these capacity on demand features is right for you.
