IBM Systems Director for System z
IBM Systems Director can help to simplify the management of your data centers. IBM Systems Director provides a set of common base functions, which are available to the entire family of IBM systems, including Linux on System z, at no charge.
Systems Director provides management for virtualization, and operating system layers for Linux on z/VM on System z. The zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager (zManager) provides management for hardware, firmware, and virtualization layers on Power Blades, IBM x86 blades, and z/VM on IBM System z. zManager provides the industry’s only platform management firmware to manage System z, POWER7 and IBM x86 platform from a single point of control.
With IBM Systems Director V6.2, administrators are able to manage the overall virtualized infrastructure as one entity with IBM Systems Director handling the underlying technical differences across different hardware and software virtual solutions can be viewed, allowing administrators to manage the overall virtualized infrastructure as one.
Leveraging industry standards, IBM Systems Director supports multiple operating systems and virtualization technologies across all IBM platforms - System z, System p, System i, System x, BladeCenter and Storage - and non-IBM platforms. Through a single user interface, IBM Systems Director provides consistent views for visualizing managed systems and determining how these systems relate to one another while identifying their individual status, thus helping to correlate technical resources with business needs.
IBM Systems Director base provides the foundation for platform lifecycle management
The IBM Systems Director for Linux on System z is offered at no additional charge. The IBM Systems Director for Linux on System z is not shipped automatically together with a System z server shipment. It can be ordered through Entitled Software Warehouse (ESW), ShopzSeries or Electronic Transfer.
IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager for System z
IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager is designed to simplify the management of virtual environments across multiple virtualization technologies and physical platforms to support the growing requirements of a dynamic infrastructure. VMControl for Linux on System z, V2.3 provides the user with cross platform virtual server life cycle management. In addition, VMControl Image Manager for Linux on System z, V2.3 provides virtual server relocation tasks for VMware on x86 and PowerVM™ on Power Systems. This includes the ability to create, edit, delete, and move virtual servers from a single tool in a consistent fashion on all of the supported hypervisors and IBM platforms.
VMControl for Linux on System z, V2.3 provides a set of image management tools to search, delete, and manage virtual appliances (also known as virtual machine images) for z/VM systems and Power Systems. Separate charges apply for image management of Power Systems. Entitlements are available with VMControl Standard Edition for Power Systems.
IBM Systems Director for Linux on System z and IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager for Linux on System z are designed to help reduce the total cost of ownership in your virtual environment by decreasing management costs, increasing asset utilization, and linking infrastructure performance to business goals. It is designed to provide simplified virtual appliance management for multiple IBM servers, including Linux on System z images for z/VM, which helps enable:
IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager for Linux on System z is available on a per-managed server basis. Service and support is available for an annual fee. A 60-day trial version of IBM Systems Director VMControl Image Manager for Linux on System z will be available from the IBM Systems Director download site.
IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager for Linux on System z
IBM Systems Director Active Energy Manager (AEM) V4.3 is an energy management solution designed to effectively manage the energy usage in data centers. Monitoring a wide range of equipment, AEM retrieves thermal and power information via external sensors and collects alerts, events, and data from facility providers related to power and cooling equipment. AEM is also designed to measure, monitor, and manage the energy management components built into IBM servers at the system, chassis, or rack level. By exploiting the energy-saving capabilities on IBM equipment, AEM can help in the analysis of data center efficiency and be used as a tool for implementing data center efficiency changes which may result in monetary savings.
AEM V4.3 integrates with the latest releases of American Power Conversion Corporation's (APC) InfraStruXure Central V5.1 and V6.0 and Eaton Corporation's Power Xpert Meters V2.0 for monitoring power and cooling infrastructure. With an increased knowledge of what is occurring with their power and cooling devices, users can take corrective actions if problems with those devices arise. AEM users can be notified and create automation plans to protect their servers.
