GDPS® is a multi-site or single-site end to end application availability solution that provides the capability to manage remote copy configuration and storage subsystems (including IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server), to automate Parallel Sysplex operation tasks and perform failure recovery from a single point of control.

GDPS helps automate recovery procedures for planned and unplanned outages to provide near-continuous availability and disaster recovery capability. With GDPS, you can have total confidence that your key business applications will be up and running when your employees, partners and customers need them.

GDPS and HyperSwap take resiliency to a higher level

HyperSwap, a software technology that can seamlessly substitute Metro Mirror (peer-to-peer remote copy, or PPRC), secondary devices for PPRC primary devices, is managed through GDPS. As its name suggests, HyperSwap is designed to swap a large number of devices and to do it fast so there is minimal impact to application availability with disruptions measured in seconds rather than hours. The HyperSwap function may be performed even if the primary disk subsystem is not operational, so you can survive a primary disk subsystem—or even a complete site—failure without recycling your systems. In business terms, that means continuous access to data if such a failure were to occur.

Long distance disaster recovery with only seconds of impact

IBM GDPS® active/active continuous availability (GDPS/AA) is a fundamental paradigm shift from a failover model to a near continuous availability model. It allows for unlimited distance replication with only seconds of user impact if there is a site disaster. By using software based replication, techniques for copying the data between sites, IBM can provide control over which workloads are being protected. GDPS automation provides an end to end automated solution and enhances the offering by helping to manage the availability of the workload and as the coordination point or controller for these activities including being a focal point for operating and monitoring the solution and readiness for recovery.

Ensuring the integrity of data in heterogeneous environments

IBM has extended GPDS/PPRC technology to be able to manage heterogeneous environments with z/OS and Open Systems data using the IBM TotalStorage Enterprise Storage Server. This has tremendous significance for enterprises seeking to reduce infrastructure complexity with combined System z and BladeCenter platforms. If your installations share disk subsystems between the z/OS and Open System platforms, GDPS/PPRC can manage the PPRC for Open Systems storage. GDPS/PPRC is also designed to provide data consistency across z/OS and Open Systems data.

GDPS/PPRC and GDPS/XRC also provide a coordinated Disaster Recovery solution for customers running a multi-tiered architecture who share storage subsystems between z/OS and Linux on System z. For example, an SAP application server running on Linux on System z and a SAP DB server running on z/OS.

For asynchronous remote copy, GDPS manages Open and System z data and exploits Global Mirror in ESS. Functions like sysplex resource management, standard actions and planned action can be used in addition to global mirror management. The initial delivery will only support System z data, IBM intends to support Open data at a later date.
