January 24, 2008. IBM has signed a licensing deal enabling Lenovo to manufacture and sell select x86 servers. The relationship will help extend IBM's technology footprint in the x86 market segment with a trusted ally, Lenovo.
This is part of IBM's ongoing business strategy to license key technologies to a range of IBM Business Partners to drive innovation in the industry. In the case of this deal with Lenovo, it may also help IBM further extend the reach of its x86 servers in the small business segment.
How it will work:
IBM is granting Lenovo a product manufacturing license for one- & two-socket tower & rack servers. Lenovo will manufacture and distribute a select set of these products. Lenovo has contracted with IBM Global Technology Services to provide services (level 1) and maintenance as well as IBM Global Financing for financing for its Top Seller models. Lenovo's one- and two-socket servers sold pursuant to this deal will be differentiated by at least the following:
- Lenovo Logo
- Lenovo unique ID
- Manufactured by Lenovo, with a Lenovo-managed supply chain
- Lenovo-managed service and support
- Configuration/setup utility chosen by Lenovo
IBM System x programs, targets and incentives for IBM Business Partners are exclusively directed at IBM branded products; they do not cover Lenovo branded server products.
