Move Up to IBM System z

We're big on openness and sharing

What's the price tag for innovation? That depends on the servers you choose. Distributed or mainframe technology, you have to look beyond purchase price to total cost of ownership and throughput. Do your servers give you plenty of muscle and security, or does adding new capabilities chip away at your capacity and increase risk? If server migration is on your to-do list, there's an easy and cost-effective way to swap chaos and complexity for flexibility and control.

IBM System z® is the open mainframe technology that can take your business further and get your IT environment under control. IBM's consolidation, virtualization and on-demand strategies give System z the edge. An open architecture supports Java, Linux and other industry standards. Streamline business processes, simplify IT and step up security. Boost utilization to 100 percent and throughput to new benchmarks. Shift resources on demand. Run the applications that drive business results. System z servers do it all—simply, easily and securely—and at a lower total cost of ownership.

Go green and save

Gartner 2007 SSEM rates the System z9 as the #1 platform for server consolidation. It's a workhorse—up to 100 percent utilization rates and support for hundreds to thousands of virtual servers in a single footprint. That's particularly impressive when you consider that average utilization rates on Intel® processor-based servers can often run in the 15 percent range and average utilization rates in legacy UNIX® environments often run in the 20 percent to 30 percent range. What's more, System z9 can do up to four times the same work in the same space and up to 12 times the work for the same power consumption—without sacrificing performance.

Manage growth, complexity and risk

Java, Linux and other standards are intrinsic to System z's open architecture. In fact, IBM's zAAP z9 Application Assist Processor (zIIP) improves Java workload integration and significantly lowers total cost of ownership. Scale from 1 to 54 processors in a single systemor scale out. System z provides the capacity and performance to handle the largest workloads from diverse sources, new workloads and open standards. That and improved resource optimization is a key benefit of our zIIP-z9 Integrated Information Processor and IFL-Integrated Facity for Linux. An On/Off capacity lets you shift capacity on demand. Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex (GDPS) and Parallel Sysplex®—two z9 exclusives—deliver staggering and geographically dispersed resilience, clustering and availability. Of course IBM is EAL5 and FIPS4 certified. Dedicated cryptographic processors, accelerators and hypersockets support the highest level of encryption to protect your intellectual capital, identity and critical data. Plus, in the highly virtualized System z environment, state-of-the-art management and automation tools give you total control.

Realize innovation

Less money spent on IT maintenance, more money left for driving innovation. With System z, you get a platform built on 40+ years of server leadership. According to Illuminata, Inc., total cost of ownership for z servers drops from 5 percent to 60 percent over typical UNIX, Linux and Windows™ alternatives. And z servers work hard. IBM and Financial Network Services, working with the Bank of China, set a new world's largest core banking benchmark result. System z9 crunched 9,445 business transactions per second in real time, and that's based on more than 380 million accounts with 3 billion transaction histories.

Marist College educates the next generation of mainframe administrators with IBM System z, IBM z/VM and IBM System Storage

"System z has been wonderful. Fabulous. A crown jewel. I can’t say enough superlatives about what it’s done for us." - A. Harry Williams, director of technology and systems, Marist College

Marist College is a leading comprehensive liberal arts institution that has gained a reputation as a trailblazer in virtualization and mainframe technologies. The college’s IT infrastructure supports a variety of functions, including systems for administration, development, production and education. Marist recently upgraded their IBM System z900 to an IBM System z9®. The z9™ mainframe runs IBM z/OS® as well as IBM z/VM®, which enables high performance for the organization's hosted virtual servers, including Linux® machines. Storage for the z9 is being transitioned to two IBM System Storage™ DS8100 disk storage systems.
