SC13 Conference Highlights
Showcasing IBM Technical Computing innovations
SC13 took place at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado, November 17–22. The conference celebrated its twenty-fifth year of serving the High Performance Computing (HPC) community and highlighted how HPC has become integral to organizations in a wide variety of fields from bioengineering, economics and medicine, to consumer products, manufacturing, public safety, entertainment, cloud computing, and business analytics.
IBM featured a broad array of Technical Computing solutions that can help organizations accelerate insights and speed results. The SC13 Technical Program and the Exhibit Hall showcased solutions from IBM Technical Computing and IBM Platform Computing, including the new IBM System Storage® DCS3860 - midrange, high-performance network attached storage announced during the show, IBM® NeXtScale System™, IBM Platform™ LSF®, IBM Platform HPC and integrated IBM Application Ready Solutions. For big data and analytics, IBM showcased IBM Power Systems™ integrated with IBM Platform Symphony, the IBM General Parallel File System (GPFS™) and IBM InfoSphere® BigInsights™ software—plus the breakthrough storage solution IBM System x® GPFS Storage Server.
As the SC13 Technical Program schedule demonstrated, SC13 is not just for research institutions or government labs—there were numerous sessions that attracted organizations from a wide variety of other fields. For example, the HPC in Finance Workshop—chaired by IBM Research, FountainHead and the University of San Francisco—brought together practitioners, researchers, vendors and scholars from the complementary fields of computational finance and HPC to promote an exchange of ideas, develop common benchmarks and methodologies, discuss future collaborations and determine new research directions. Other IBM teams will be participated in sessions, for example, on the IBM Research initiative X10—a high-performance, high-productivity programming language—and on tools for very large-scale analytics.

SC13 EXHIBIT HALL: NEW SOLUTIONS FROM IBM
IBM Technical Computing solutions showcased at the IBM booth included new IBM NeXtScale System designed specifically for compute- and data-intensive workloads, such as technical computing, big data and HPC cloud, IBM Application Ready Solutions. GPFS™, GPFS Storage Server, IBM FlashSystem™ , IBM Networking Systems, IBM tape, IBM System Storage DCS3860, IBM Blue Gene®/Q, IBM Power Systems, OpenCL on IBM PowerLinux™ 7R2 and IBM Flex System™.
In addition, IBM showcased demos featuring Platform Symphony big data acceleration, Platform LSF and HPC cloud solutions. Some of the solutions shown included fully integrated genomics workflow, remote visualization and energy aware scheduling. In addition, a Platform HPC workload management / NeXtScale System demo highlighted how easy it is to scale the system and control small-to-large cluster environments.
