IBM pushes the boundaries of storage technology
IBM invented the concept of using tape recording media for commercial data storage. Since its introduction to the market in 1952, IBM has continued to develop innovative tape technologies.
The high speed IBM System Storage TS1140 Tape Drive with 4TB cartridge offers approximately 2 million times more capacity than the first IBM 726 Tape Unit. IBM Research continues to improve tape technology and envisions capacity improvements of over 8 times in the next few years.
IBM tape innovation has been acknowledged with the 2011 Engineering Emmy® award for Innovation and the 2012 Storage Vision® award for Visionary Media and Entertainment Company for IBM Linear Tape File System (LTFS), The first file system that works in conjunction with tape technology, LTFS sets a new standard for ease-of-use and portability for tape storage.

Tape is an essential component of today’s storage infrastructure
Tape is an important part of storage infrastructure for data protection and retention. With the explosion of data, storage administrators are being challenged to manage bulging backup and restore windows and to meet existing and emerging regulatory requirements including the access to reference data for extended periods of time. IBM tape products provide hyper-efficient backup and recovery options and secure repositories for data archiving while lowering the total cost of ownership.
