The high speed IBM System Storage TS1140 Tape Drive with 4TB cartridge offers approximately 2 million times more capacity than the first IBM 726 Tape Unit. IBM Research continues to improve tape technology and envisions capacity improvements of over 8 times in the next few years.

IBM tape innovation has been acknowledged with the 2011 Engineering Emmy® award for Innovation and the 2012 Storage Vision® award for Visionary Media and Entertainment Company for IBM Linear Tape File System (LTFS), The first file system that works in conjunction with tape technology, LTFS sets a new standard for ease-of-use and portability for tape storage.
