Backup and restore solutions

Conduct backups without disrupting application availability, and restore efficiently and quickly

Executive summaryBusiness viewTechnical details
Backup and restore solutions

Businesses today struggle to hit or shrink batch windows for backups, while meeting required service and availability levels, and managing exponential data growth. As they implement faster backup solutions, they must still make sure data is backed up properly and recoverable. Service level agreements (SLAs), which mandate short backup and recovery windows, call for solutions that provide centralization, automation and multimedia (disk and tape) backup and restore.

A solid continuity plan can help you maintain access to your applications and data, even during daily backup operations. When your operations are online, no one is locked out of your business — and that can help drive sales and productivity.

Located in Takamatsu City, Kawaga prefecture, STNet is an independent offshoot of the information systems department of YONDEN Shikoku Electric Power Co., Ltd. While capitalizing on the strengths of an electrical communications company, STNet provides a comprehensive internet data center service combining the information systems business and telecommunications business. The company has technological competence in building information systems and is highly valued for its operational expertise.

Business need: The emergence of simultaneous acts of terrorism in the U.S. in 2001 and the natural disasters in Japan in 2004, including typhoons and the Niigata earthquake, has demanded sophisticated countermeasures. STNet, Inc., (hereafter, STNet) needed to change its then–current method of storing customers’ data on magnetic tape and forwarding that tape by road for storage in remote locations.
Solution: STNet uses the IBM System Storage™ DS8000™/6000™ series as the infrastructure for its remote data–backup service. The service helps to increase the accuracy of data storage as well as the speed of disaster recovery with a combination of a high–performance, highly reliable disk storage system and a high–grade network infrastructure.
Benefits: STNet service supports safe, secure and speedy remote copying of data in close to real–time owing to dedicated communication lines employing optical fiber; STNet service offers backup data storage within the customer’s facilities and STNet’s two data centers in Takamatsu and Matsuyama; Pay–as–you–go service methodology supports high–quality service at low cost; Disk rental service allows use of SAN connection or NAS connection for customers who use data centers for housing or hosting.
