- The Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) is acomponent of DFSMS/MVS. The purpose of SMS is to eliminate, simplify and automate tasks normally done by users or a
storage administrator.
- The Storage Management Subsystem (SMS) providesa range of automated data and space management functions.SMS improves storage space use, controls external storagecentrally, and lets you manage storage growth. It makes it easier to convert to new device types and ittakes advantage of what available hardware can do.
- SMS allows the
storage administrator to affect new data set allocations, volume extend, and data movement by assigning
classes and groups to a new data set which affect data set attributes, placement, migration and backup.
-
Classes and groups are assigned via installation written Automatic Class Selection Routines which are called by the Interpreter/Dynamic Allocation Exit (IDAX).
- The implementation of
classes and groups and Automatic Class Selection Routines is referred to as a storage policy.
The assigned classes and groups are:
- used by SMS to determine data set characteristicsduring initial allocation
- used by SMS to select the bestavailable volume(s) for data set allocation
- used by SMS for dynamic cache management
- used by OAM for object placement within an object storage hierarchy
- used by OAM for object class transition
- used by HSM Hierarchical Storage Manager for backup and migration decisions
- used by HSM for disaster backup and recovery
