Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director for IBM System Networking is a director-class SAN switch designed for deployment in large-scale storage networks to enable enterprise clouds and business transformation. Layering a comprehensive set of intelligent features onto a high-performance, protocol-independent switch fabric, Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director for IBM System Networking addresses the rigorous requirements of large, virtualized data-center storage environments with high availability, scalability, flexibility, security, ease of management and transparent integration of new technologies. By adding enterprise connectivity options that support IBM FICON® connectivity, MDS 9710 delivers a high performing and reliable FICON infrastructure designed to support fast and scalable IBM System z® servers. The MDS 9700 platform provides multi-protocol flexibility for storage area networks (SANs) delivering both 16-Gbps Fibre Channel and 10-Gbps FCoE capabilities.

IBM System Storage SAN768B-2 and SAN384B-2 fabric backbones are among the industry's most powerful Fibre Channel switching infrastructure offerings, providing reliable, scalable, high-performance foundations for private or hybrid cloud storage and highly virtualized environments. These fabric backbones have been enhanced with enterprise connectivity options to add support for IBM FICON® connectivity, offering a highly reliable FICON infrastructure with fast and scalable IBM System z® servers.

Designed to increase business agility while providing nonstop access to information and reducing both infrastructure and administrative costs, the SAN768B-2 and SAN384B-2 fabric backbones with Gen 5 Fibre Channel technology and 16 Gbps performance deliver a new level of scalability and advanced capabilities to this robust, reliable and high-performance technology. This enables organizations to continue leveraging their existing IT investments as they grow their businesses and solve their most difficult business challenges.

Ports Single chassis: Up to 512 (SAN768B-2) or 256 (SAN384B-2) 16 Gbps universal (E, F, D, M and EX) Fibre Channel ports using 64-port 16 Gbps Fibre Channel blades. Multi-chassis with inter-chassis link (ICL) ports: Up to 6,144 16 Gbps Fibre Channel ports; UltraScale ICL ports (32 or 16 per chassis, optical quad small form-factor pluggables [QSFPs]) connecting up to nine b-type SAN768B-2/SAN384B-2 chassis in a full-mesh topology or up to 12 chassis in a core-edge topology.
Deploying four or more chassis with UltraScale ICL connections within a fabric requires an Enterprise ICL license.

The base director offers Virtual SAN (VSAN), Cisco Fabric Manager and 11 feature slots. The director uses intelligent networking services to help simplify mainframe FICON® and Fibre Channel SAN management and reduce total cost of ownership (TCO).
