IBM XIV goes the distance with new enhancements to this next-generation, high-end disk storage product. The IBM XIV Storage System has a virtualized, grid-based architecture which enables self-tuning and self-healing as well as amazing management simplicity and low total costs. Now it offers the following enhancements:

Easy, Flexible Mirroring -- XIV asynchronous mirroring enables replication at virtually unlimited distances between sites in support of disaster recovery and remote backup solutions. This feature complements the existing XIV synchronous mirroring capability. XIV asynchronous mirroring is flexible and can be automatic based on a user-configurable schedule, or a manual command. Its flexibility extends to many other parameters including support for multiple consistency groups, targets, and mirrored pairs.

Instant Space Reclamation -- Lower costs via optimization of capacity use is made possible through the XIV Thin Provisioning capability. Previously, XIV Thin Provisioning space reclamation detected and released unused storage on a periodic basis. The XIV instant space reclamation function allows supporting applications to interlock with XIV to detect unused space instantly -- so it can be automatically and immediately reassigned for reuse.

Manage across the SAN with IBM Tivoli solutions

IBM Tivoli FlashCopy Manager 2.1 support for XIV can facilitate automated, application-aware management of snapshots -- helping to alleviate the scripting tasks, improve service levels, enhance data protection and recoverability, and simplify snapshot management especially in complex heterogeneous storage environments.
Tivoli Storage Productivity Center 4.1 supports discovery, asset and utilization management, historical trending and alerting within XIV environments.
Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) Copy Services 6 for Advanced Copy Services enhances copy, backup, and restore operations for Windows® and AIX applications.

IBM XIV delivers consistent high performance without manual tuning. Data is automatically distributed to best utilize system resources and to optimize performance. The self-tuning capability ensures equilibrium is kept and performance is optimized even when hardware is added, changed, or removed.

IBM XIV offers instantaneous snapshots. The innovative XIV approach enables almost unlimited snapshot copies of data to be made in sub-second time without impact to system performance. Snapshots are created instantly and are immediately available for use as backup copies, or for testing, development, data mining, and other uses. This capability can dramatically improve IT operations dependent upon copied volumes.

IBM XIV offers thin provisioning. Provisioning storage systems can be time-consuming and error-prone due to the tedious, manual work tasks needed to manage it. By enabling the definition of a logical volume size that is larger than the volume’s physical size, the IBM XIV system can automatically add physical capacity when it is needed, instead of wasting capacity in anticipation of growth. Physical capacity allocated to individual applications can increase without impacting the application when data growth occurs or wasting capacity that is not needed. Thin provisioning is designed to reduce costs and make system management easier, allowing simpler scaling of application volumes as data needs grow.
