IBM Storage Virtualization

GREENING UP
THE DATA CENTER Brighten up with the latest storage virtualization ideas from IBM

What's new?

New configuration options, space-efficient virtual disks, thin provisioning - virtualization capabilities from IBM to help you achieve the maximum capacity, efficiency and manageability of your data center, and to help turn your data center a brighter shade of "green."

IBM Virtualization Engine TS7500

Optimize open system backup applications using an integrated, tiered storage hierarchy of disk and tape storage, leveraging the benefits of all. The IBM TS7500 Virtualization system Engine uses IBM technology and software to emulate IBM tape libraries, drives, and media to enhance storage system performance and capacity and help customers achieve operational and throughput efficiencies. The solution uses a combination of an IBM TS7530 server and a version of IBM TS7500 software.

The IBM Virtualization Engine TS7530 server provides high performance and scalable tape virtualization solutions for growing customer environments. The TS7530 server integrates functions like HW compression and 1 TB disk drives for increased speed and additional storage capacity at a lower price per GB. The TS7530 server also supports RAID 6 and System i BRMS integration.

IBM SAN Volume Controller

When you have a mix of different disk systems, IBM System Storage™ SAN Volume Controller (SVC) provides a powerful tool for storage administrators. It centralizes management of supported storage to improve utilization, control growth, and improve application availability. It also enables configuration changes such as data movement without disruption to servers and offers common replication functions that operate in the same way for all supported storage systems.

IBM SAN Volume Controller version 4.3 adds critical new functions to an already-powerful SAN Volume Controller base:

  • Space-Efficient Virtual Disks use disk space only when data is written instead of reserving disk space for the entire capacity of a virtual disk.
  • Space-Efficient FlashCopy uses disk space only for changes between source and target data and not for the entire capacity of a virtual disk copy.
  • Virtual Disk Mirroring helps improve availability for critical applications by storing two copies of a virtual disk on different disk systems.
  • Improved Interoperability includes support for Windows 2008 and Mac OS X, as well as Pillar Axiom disk systems.
