New TS3500 frames offer high-density slot technology
IBM has announced two new expansion frames for the IBM TS3500 Tape Library. Both new models are driveless, storage–only expansion frames and incorporate IBM's patented high–density (HD) slot technology, which allows multiple cartridges to be stored in a tiered architecture. Model S54 is designed to contain up to 1,320 Ultrium (LTO) tape cartridges, offering a 3:1 increase in slot capacity over the Model D53. Model S24 is designed to contain up to 1,000 3592 tape cartridges, offering a 2.5:1 increase in slot capacity over the Model D23.

1 TB drives enhance IBM TS3400 and TS3500 Tape Libraries
IBM has announced the new IBM TS1130, the industry’s first enterprise tape drive combining 1 TB capacity with 160 Mbps data rate. The new drive is now supported in the IBM TS3400 and TS3500 tape libraries and by the TS1120 tape controllers. TS1130 tape drives provide data protection technology including high performance encryption to protect data from unauthorized physical access and inadvertent data exposure when tape media is lost or stolen. Low power consumption of the TS1130 drives helps conserve energy and saves on utility costs..

IBM TS7650G offers backup with inline de-duplication
IBM has announced the IBM System Storage™ TS7650G ProtecTIER™ De–duplication Gateway (TS7650G Server), a virtual tape library (VTL) that makes your data residing on disk or other media appear to back up applications as one or many automated tape libraries. Without changing existing backup policies, practices or procedures, the backup application accesses drives, robotics and cartridges just as it would in a physical tape library environment. The solution consists of an IBM System Storage TS7650G Server combined with IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition software. It offers in–line data de–duplication through IBM’s patent-pending HyperFactorTM Technology, employing a pattern-recognition algorithm designed to reduce storage needs up to a factor of 25:1 while providing enterprise class data integrity.
