Deduplication is Hot!

Remember when eliminating redundant data meant reformatting diskettes? Things have changed. Rapid data growth has prompted vendors like IBM to develop new data reduction technologies. Deduplication has emerged as the most effective way to handle massive data growth.

Inline vs. Post–Processing Deduplication

Most vendors rely on a post processing approach to deduplication. Post processing runs as a secondary process, after the backup job completes to remove redundant data. This approach imposes a burden on the data center, lengthening the overall backup window and increasing the amount of storage needed to temporarily store un-deduplicated data. IBM ProtecTIER® features inline deduplication which removes duplicate data in real–time, as it is received by the system. This approach increases storage efficiency, maximizes backup and recovery performance and minimizes the effort needed to integrate powerful deduplication technology into customer’s existing backup environments.

IBM ProtecTIER® Deduplication Solutions

IBM ProtecTIER® Deduplication Solutions, with its revolutionary and patented HyperFactor data deduplication technology, is the only data deduplication solution on the market that can provide enterprise-class performance, scalability, and proven enterprise-level data integrity to meet the disk-based data protection needs of the enterprise data center while enabling significant infrastructure cost reductions.

Combining Deduplication and Replication technologies

ProtecTIER’s native replication technology enables virtual tape cartridges to be replicated to a remote location for enhanced disaster recovery and business continuity. By eliminating the need to physically transport actual tape cartridges, data can be recovered faster and more reliably, enabling systems to get back online quicker in the event of a disaster or major system outage. It also lowers the total cost of ownership of backup and recovery by eliminating the costs associated with moving and storing physical tape cartridges.
