Maintaining availability of data for many businesses requires innovative techniques for speedy backup and restore of large databases, along with methods for supporting disaster recovery over long distances while maintaining data integrity. These techniques can take advantage of features of an intelligent disk storage system working together with a database management subsystem.

Oracle Database servers and IBM System Storage N series storage servers can be used together to create near-instantaneous copies of data (also called "snap shots" in database terminology) and remote mirrors of data. The IBM System N series supports these capabilities through its copy services using SnapshotTM, SnapVault®, and SnapMirror® to make local copies and synchronous, asynchronous or semisynchronous copies to disaster recovery sites in remote locations.

Oracle database and IBM System Storage N series storage servers can also be used together to help protect against disaster situations (for example, a whole database production server shutdown or a natural disaster on the production server location) using a combination of Oracle Hot Standby Databases and SnapMirror.

The IBM Open Systems Laboratory in San Jose has completed a series of tests to validate its implementation of Oracle snapshot technologies and SnapMirror technologies in accordance with the requirement of the Oracle Storage Compatibility Program (OSCP).

Through this process, IBM has successfully demonstrated that its advanced storage technology can operate with Oracle database technology. Oracle has created an extensive test suite that validates compatibility of servers and storage with Oracle Real Application Clusters databases.

The OSCP is a cooperative program designed to facilitate tighter integration and compatibility between Oracle Server and storage vendors. Through this process, vendors can voluntarily perform a specified sequence of tests designed to validate proper execution of specific functions when used in conjunction with Oracle Server.
